An introduction to the author and the prototype of the protagonist of the novel "The Iron Cross"
Willi Heinrich (August 9, 1920 – June 12, 2005) was a German writer and author of the novel based on the film The Iron Cross.
Born in the city of Heidelberg in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Heinrich was with the 228th Chasseur Regiment of the 101st Chasseur Division on the Eastern Front during World War II Served with the 1st Battalion, which suffered a 70 percent casualty rate throughout the war, and Heinrich himself was wounded five times.
