There are art film book reviews that this film is Fassbender's first film that begins to use Hollywood's story structure to reveal real social problems in Germany.
But it is estimated that many people will not agree with the word "Hollywood" in the comments after watching the movie. The first Fassbender film I watched was "River of Death". After watching it until now, I am still deeply impressed. It is not how much I agree with the content of the film or I am moved by it, but I cannot understand why the film changed. It has become like this, recalling the content of "Death River", I will have some sympathy for "Condom Man", which is the most incomprehensible recently, at least it has an intention that can be recognized, whether it is like or hate. But "River of Death" gave me complete alienation, the content was difficult and dry, and the performance was so blunt that the audience couldn't get into it, which formed a complete contrast with the nude scenes in the film.
Obviously, this "The Merchant of Four Seasons" is closer to Hollywood in a sense than "River of Death". At least the stories can be comparable, but the detachment of the performance and the stereotyped action still made me discover his films. It's more like the puppets are doing mise-en-scene.
But I have to admire his meticulous observation and cognition of life. There is no fixed pattern in people's life at that time, and there are no ups and downs. Most people live in ordinary little lives. The expectations of the people are always too high and too large, and they are divorced from the actual life. The life of every ordinary person is ordinary. Others do not want to waste time to understand, because everyone is similar. Why can't we truly reproduce ourselves? Fassbender did it, so he had so much to photograph and worked so skillfully and quickly.
Maybe Fassbender is not a master in rendering emotions, adding color to pictures, or even editing shots, but his devotion to life, the observation and performance of people's state in real life, definitely contributed to mankind.
