It's been a long time since I wrote about my afterthought. I recently watched "Captain Fantastic", and I suddenly wanted to record my thoughts at that time.
It is really easy to miss this film by looking at the title, and many film critics will conclude that it is a struggle between being born and joining the WTO. In the end, a compromise was made, and that's it. Is it really so "boring"? After reading it, I realized that the name is so good.
In the past, when watching a movie, I always expected an ending that I hoped for, and unknowingly used my own value expectations to be preconceived. Many details of the movie are often overlooked, and these details are often crucial and the cornerstone of the character's behavior. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, and now I see more and more details like this, so I can better understand the director's intentions from different perspectives.
The film has a character that doesn't really appear, but that character sets the tone of the film. She is Ben's wife and mother of six, Leslie. The audience may only know that Leslie is mentally ill, but here's a detail that she suffers from bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder. People with bipolar have alternating episodes of mania and depression. For a period of time, the patient will be energetic, sleep less, and want to do everything, which makes people feel overly positive; but for a period of time, the patient will experience severe depression, feeling empty and hopeless, negative and guilty, and have repeated thoughts of death. This personality trait explains several places in the movie that make people suspicious. Is the mother willing to stay in the mountains? For example, the third son Rellian overheard his mother saying that he was going to leave the mountains, and the eldest son Bodevan also applied for the ivy because of his mother's secret encouragement. This shows his mother's desire to return to society; but it was Leslie's suggestion to live in the mountains. , the third letter she left to Ben before her death was to approve the choice of living in the mountains, and the first two letters were torn up (implying her extreme contradiction). Therefore, it is impossible to simply conclude whether it is right or wrong to stay in the mountains, because her illness causes her to fluctuate. But the premise is that it is difficult for the patient to survive in this hypocritical and predatory society (choose suicide).
It's only natural to understand Captain Marvel's behavior on this tone. Many viewers said that Ben just wanted to play God, imposing his own values on children. Children have freedom of choice. They keep saying that this society is hypocritical and not suitable for survival, and teach children to steal in a blink of an eye! The real hypocritical and selfish person is him! But from the starting point of his two choices, it can be seen that Ben is the most sincere lover, the greatest father, and also an ordinary and noble person! He chose to live in the mountains (born) for two reasons. One is that he really hates this society, but the main reason is because he loves Leslie too much. He thinks that according to Leslie's wishes, living in the mountains can purify her soul. , let her forget the world, and she will get better! But in the end Leslie committed suicide, and Ben felt that his choice was wrong, so he reluctantly gave up custody of his six children, hoping to make the children truly (join the WTO). His starting point is all because of love! Not selfish! Although his choice went to extremes, it was precisely because of his "God"-style education that he cultivated children with self-discipline, tenacity, and independent thinking, without a soul alienated by the dark society. It is too easy to integrate into the society, and it is too difficult to maintain a unique soul! The eldest daughter Kielyr's evaluation of Lolita is rational and full of personal feelings, I am afraid that a 50-year-old may not be able to say it. People inevitably judge others in the present world, and these evaluations are extremely narrow, because we are alienated by society, we do not perceive this alienation, when someone jumps out of this box to refute you, you You will think this person is a freak. Because we take everything for granted. Children don't understand Christmas, they don't understand adidas, they don't understand Star Track, they don't understand some worldly taboos, they don't understand the power of money. But the most valuable thing about being human is the ability to think independently, not to be blinded by the world to pursue something we don't actually need. Therefore, the ending is precisely that the child pulls the father back, they are not the puppet of the father, they make the choice of their independent thinking. This is the greatest reward for a great father! How to maintain oneself while entering the WTO, the scene at the end of the movie, quiet and insipid, an ordinary father is a magical captain, he is guarding his home, guarding his beliefs... And outside the window seems to be another a world!
