I think the director deliberately made comparisons one by one. Similar scenes are constantly appearing in the film to reflect the differences between the two generations of godfathers. Michael's father Vito has a healthy and happy family, like a wolf, with a cruel heart. Yes. There was enthusiasm inside; Michael was the opposite. First, he killed the brother-in-law as soon as he appeared on the stage, which caused the sister to turn against each other, and then the betrayal brother. Finally, the wife couldn't bear the cold husband and wife life, and aborted the boy in her belly. Suddenly, a huge family became only a lonely man. Vito always says, "A man with a family is a real man." Michael learned a lot from his father, but he missed this point.
You can see more from the deaths of two people. After vito retired, he stayed forever, accompany his grandson while playing hide-and-seek while pouring lace, and playing games as zombies. Finally, he fell down with a whirr. It can be said that this kind of death is perfect. There was no pain or resentment, and I bought joy with one last breath; Michael also fell down with a whirr, but fell beside the puppy, with no one beside him, behind him is the ancestral house in Sicily where countless painful experiences are recorded. Michael’s last close-up is that his gray hair and a felt hat are just like an ordinary old man. I thought he was arranged to tell his posterity stories before him to set off the godfather who had experienced great winds and waves, great joy and great compassion. The director arranged for a while and recalled the happy situation of michael dancing with his two wives and daughters, but still gave Michael's ending in a stronger way—a sad death.
I don’t think that michael is evil. Instead of saying that he is strategizing, it’s better to say that he couldn’t do anything at every step. At first he was ordered to take the position of godfather, and then he had to carry out a large-scale purge inside and outside the gang, followed by a series of enemies. He had his own brother, but in the end he couldn't hold on and had to give it to his nephew. As he said, he wants to clean up the family all his life and wants to legalize the business, but people are involuntarily in the rivers and lakes. In a blink of an eye, year after year, the bodyguards and thugs around him are constantly changing, and the enemy in front of him is also innovating. Thousands of years of methods have to continue to be followed.
There are a few things I don’t understand. In the end, what kind of person Tom Hagen is. Michael of Part I has announced that he will no longer serve as a military adviser. He is just a family lawyer, but he is still Michael’s staff. At the end of Part II, Tom opposed Michael. Afterwards, he said that he would leave the family to settle in vages, and then he said to Franklin that he would overthrow the family and establish a new dynasty. Franklin talked endlessly. As soon as the camera turned, Franklin committed suicide in the bathtub, and then Tom Hagen did not show up; Part III simply said that Tom died. Why did he die, whether he died spontaneously or was killed, without revealing any information. For this important person who runs through the first and second parts, this must end in addition to being wronged. Still wronged.
Mention the "Country Knights" by Timothy Mascari. The first time was in "Sunny Day" twice. One time was Ma Xiaojun's summer wandering on the roof all day long waiting for the person in his heart to appear. The second time was when Ma Xiaojun was finally caught Everyone was squeezed out, and someone stepped into the water in the swimming pool. The performance is always difficult to describe. As Jiang Wen said, this film has different meanings to everyone; the second time it was played at the beginning of "Angry Bull". Motta threw a punch on the ring, and finally La Motta recalled the day when he threw a punch. It was the magnificent side of "Country Knights" and the other side was sad, which coincided with the ending; the third time in "The Godfather Part III" Michael's daughter Mary was killed by mistake, the music brought out all the pain, and the unforgettable michael's exaggerated cry. I don’t know what is the inevitable connection between the interlude of "Country Knights" and the life of the owner, Mascari. This young musician who got his name but turned to fascism in the middle of his life and finally fell into failure, his life is worth using that piece of music. Come to accompany-grand and sad.
It turned out that Mary was Sofia Coppola, the daughter of Francis Coppola, who was the director of "Lost in Tokyo" twelve years later!
And
I will only say a few words here in a simple way.
