"Deception in Deception" is like a piece of white and flawless jasper, with no flaws to be found. This is the charm of old movies, limited by the age of the movie and the imitation and tribute of later directors, which greatly reduces the final surprise of the movie, but it is still worth watching. I think there are three major highlights of the film's success: 1. The film's solid script, as a film with progressive plot layers, the script is the only way to promote the rhythm of the film. 2. Paul Newman, the star of the movie, is so brilliant, Henry Conoff didn't appear until 26 minutes into the movie, and his eyes couldn't stop on him as soon as he appeared. As soon as he appeared on the stage, he was just a middle-aged man who was passive and drunk, but when it came to "cheating", his eyes lit up, and his confidence was beyond belief. He is different from the little street crooks like Hook. He has his own high-quality team and learns to cooperate to be successful. 3. Anti-heroism, the movie is finally achieved by liars, which is different from individual heroism in the traditional sense.
Or about Henry Conove, my favorite character in the entire movie, and the first time the film shows his masterful deception is a gamble on a train. Although in the preparation stage, the unfamiliar shuffling technique made people sweat, but the subsequent performance was perfect. In order to make the other party mistakenly think that he is a drunk, he relaxed his vigilance and drank gin mixed with water. Before the start of the game, find out what the opponent is doing and deal with it calmly. After being discovered, he did not panic, and he did not dare to tear his face when he caught the opponent, angering the opponent. This allows Hook to take advantage of it and seduce the other side step by step.
The only thing that surprises me in the movie is that the waitress in the restaurant is actually a killer, which is really unexpected. The premise of the FBI line is that Henry knows that the police are arresting Hook, and he will definitely respond with caution. In all fairness, this 1973 film can get a good reputation when it is released now, but it is not too brilliant in today's era of movies. But at that time, "Deception in Deception" was definitely a god-like movie.
