As Luther once said, "It's the lesser cheater who makes the biggest bet." Liar's survival is also a kind of technology. The business of a swindler is not a lucrative business. The cost of any such lucrative business is enormous, even as it was Luther's life. Hook would certainly have died without Henry Conf's teachings, which is the biggest difference between a stable (great) liar, who minimizes his own damage, and a rogue, who lacks the thought to do it. Perhaps that is what Luther meant in his last words. In the end, life is all about positive thinking.
