Immature Reflections on the Ideology of "Jojo Rabbit"

On August 1, 2020, after a six-month suspension of work in the cinema, I finally walked into the theater of my heart. The last time I went to a movie to watch a movie was in "The Gathering at Southern Station" last year. I chose from left to right with my friends, and finally chose "Jojo Rabbit" as the first film to be watched in theaters after the re-screening. I waited a long time for this afterthought, because I don't know how to evaluate it. "Jojo Rabbit" suddenly reminds people of Wes Anderson's work, but it is not like Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom", "Budapest Hotel", "Canis Island", Anderson's "fairy tale" is created by him In the almost absurd exquisiteness, some cruel things are told. "Jojo Rabbit" gives people the feeling, first of all, it is a beautiful work, a child's perspective, a warm tone, a "little story" constructed by family and friendship. But compared to the quality of the film itself, the strange stance it carries is more prominent and uncomfortable. This is also the reason why I cannot evaluate it all at once. I repeatedly think about what it wants to convey. ? You can’t say that it is completely beautifying the Nazis, because it has comedicized Hitler and portrayed him as a "friend" in the protagonist’s fantasy. This dramatic treatment is completely inconsistent with the irony of Chaplin’s "The Great Dictator." The difference is that Chaplin’s dramatization is pungent, with a clear criticism of Nazis and fascism, even though the United States at the time was not even opposed to fascism, and "Jojo Rabbit" lowered Hitler’s age. Let him speak fascist remarks, do childish child behaviors, and finally tear the mask and be kicked out of the window by the protagonist. In addition to the fantasy of Hitler, "Jojo Rabbit" also mainly features such a few characters, Germany in World War II, far from the back of the battlefield, an anti-Nazi German mother, because of injuries, was transferred to the rear away from the battlefield "special" Nazi officer , Children who believe in Nazis, a Jewish girl who is hidden in the attic and protected... the whole story cleverly avoids the cruel truth about the Nazis. The concentration camps are only passed by the Jewish girls, and all the atrocities of the Nazis are absent here. It is a direct manifestation that even the Gestapo’s door-to-door visit has been comedicized. The only people who died at the hands of the Nazis are leaving the country with their legs. Only the slow motion of the last war was sabotaged, and the "war is cruel". "German people are also victims." To describe the "Germans injured by the war", what is even more comical is that the American flag was floated immediately after the war. It was not the people injured by the Nazis who finally won, but the American savior came. This strange angle brings me a particularly strange feeling. From the point of view of the perpetrator, there are also innocent people among the perpetrators, represented by a child. Only these children used the mother's words to evaluate, this child just believes in the wrong things. Those who are familiar with film criticism should know that there is a film criticism called ideological criticism. Its most important argument is that what is not said is what it really wants to say. In the above content, in the story, what is selectively told is not the real content, and what is selectively hidden is its true position. The film deliberately avoids the cruelty of fascist Germany and the Nazis. The German people support the Nazi fanaticism. The film avoids the really important things from a selective perspective. Finally, a weird work appeared. The American movie "The Trial at Nuremberg" discussed the anti-fascist war, fascist Germany, the Nazis, and the people in a very serious manner. When we pursue World War II, what are we looking for? Are all the mistakes made by Hitler alone? Are all the evils caused by the Nazi Party and fascism? So what about those who champion these things? Are they really good people who "believe in the wrong theory"? Or are evil people doing evil under the name of "belief"? Looking further afield, who allowed fascism to the point where it was later? Britain and France’s appeasement policy, disasters, and Soviet-German friendship regulations, these big powers sit by watching fascists expand in Europe, watching them massacre and expel Jews; on the Pacific battlefield, the big powers are watching Japan invade China, and they even want to get a share of the pie and make money. The United States is selling weapons at both ends and making loans... When the world is dragged into war, who is innocent? Everyone hopes that the pain will pass, and they want to simply blame the mistake on some people. Others just believe in something wrong, fooled, deceived, and they are also victims. Then they step over and start a new life—— What about those who were killed? What about the people who were killed in the atrocities, endured suffering, and innocent victims? Nuremberg was filmed in 1961. Almost 60 years have passed. American filmmakers seem to have completely lost the spirit of serious thinking. The position of today's film is no longer the guilt of the year, and the declining hegemonism is trying to rewrite and obscure history. (Germans themselves do not make this kind of film. Germany has a "Tin Drum".) Today, when the international status of the United States is declining, it seems that they can only use movies to exaggerate their once greatness, just as they were anti-fascist in the past. The victorious United States has established a dollar system to make the American dream the most brilliant...Today, the United States has no confidence to reflect on the war. Perhaps seeing such stories in the past will be touched, but in today's situation, wiping away the tears brings more anxiety and doubts.

  • Rosie: [exasperated] Where are all the goddamned knives?

  • Rosie: [Jojo has told her that he hears the ghost of his dead sister upstairs] You've lost your mind. It's sadder for me though, because I have to live with a crazy person.
