Ryuko Matsu, Shunji Iwai, "April Story" and My Red Umbrella Complex

This is the third time I have watched this film, and of course there is a reason for it every time. The first time was in the early days of college graduation, and it was not long after I moved my DVD machine from Carrefour excitedly. It was not the first film I watched. Iwai-kun's film, the first one should be "Love Letter", "Love Letter" was introduced to me by my high school classmate Na, of course, due to her overly exaggerated recommendation, I felt good about the film, but it was not good enough to meet my psychological expectations. To the extent that I got to know Shunji Iwai, the Japanese director.

The second time I watched it was because I happened to watch the original music video of April on the music channel, which aroused my desire to enjoy it again. And this time, it was because I happened to know that Song Longzi was getting married this year, and what impressed me most about Song Longzi was her in mid-April. Naturally, as a woman who likes Japanese dramas, I usually pay more attention to the film itself or the male stars in it. I don't care much about female stars, but even if I don't pay much attention, there are still types that I like more, that is to say The girl has a good impression. Matsu Takako is one of the types I like. Of course, I was first impressed by Akana Rika, but it is more of this character in Dong Ai, who is not very related to Suzuki Honami herself. I like her characters and she herself. The reason is that they all meet my inner desire for truth, goodness and beauty, and their character and appearance are all to my taste.

The plot of April is actually quite simple. Uzuki Uzuki, a girl from Asahikawa, Hokkaido, came to study at Musashino University in Tokyo. The whole story is about the daily life of a freshman in the university, her relationship with her neighbors, her relationship with classmates, and more. Participating in interest groups in the school, watching movies, renting bicycles to wander around, going to the nearby bookstore to read and buy books... and so on. Thinking about my college days, I was similar to her. Of course, this is a movie, and it inevitably has its style. One point, if it was made into film, it would definitely be a documentary, not aesthetic at all, skipping classes, and rushing to the opposite store to buy something to eat after class, rushing into the dining hall like a hungry wolf at noon to buy food, and talking about senior handsome guys while eating, smearing oil, The popular version of college life should be taken back, not to mention our college life. To put it simply, as a film, "April Story" does not win by plot, but in structure and style. It is beautiful and tranquil like lyrical prose and poetry, and it is such a pure-hearted film (innocent and hypocritical are different, pure love is naturally revealed, hypocritical is artificial and rigid. ) I couldn't help but love it. Along with the simple piano music, the warm tones are fresh and soft, the girl Yuye is quiet and a little shy, and the beauty of simplicity and nature touches my heart. Song Takako's acting is sincere and moving. Rather than speaking, it is better to say that she is photogenic. This is originally the original ecological style of an 18- or 19-year-old girl, so she is naturally agile and does not need more advanced things such as acting skills. Iwai's films have a strong personal style, his work is his temperament, and it is a skill to shoot a type of film to the extreme, so I don't agree with some people who like to comment that a certain writer's novels do not have a high degree of depth, and a certain director's novels have no depth. The film lacks the sense of social responsibility and so on. Everyone's temperament is inherently different, and the environment and education they are in are different.

When it comes to Iwai, I like almost all of his films. If there is anything in common with his works, it is the expression of all kinds of youth and the nostalgia and reverence conveyed. Some youth are cruel and painful, such as "Youth Electric Fantasy Story" (all about Lily Zhou); some youth are fresh and beautiful, such as "April Story" and "Love Letter"; some youth are dreamy and innocent, such as "Dream Traveler".

Back in April, in the director's quiet narration, we didn't know the reason why Yuno left Hokkaido to study at Musashino University in distant Tokyo until the end of the film. The senior studied at this university, and she chose Musashino University. A girl with poor grades created a miracle because of love. We might as well understand it as a miracle of love. Yuye's love is one-way, it's one-way to the point that it doesn't need what we call a result, whether it's a good result, the girl and the senior are right or bad, the girl can't interact with the senior, these are not Important, not important to Yuye, even less important to the film. It’s not so much that Yuye likes a specific person like the senior, but she likes the feeling that she is immersed in this atmosphere of love. The senior is just a carrier for her to project this feeling. She doesn’t have to bear any consequences, so the girl Always have your own happiness.

From the beginning to the end of the film, in addition to the piano music running through it, there is also red running through it... The red door, the red apron... and the red long umbrella...

If you want to ask me what scenes I remember most, there are two One I will never forget. The first is the scene where Yuye held a chair in one hand and shook off the corner of his clothes to hide the cherry blossoms inside his clothes. The scene was impeccably beautiful to me. It takes effort to be impressed. There is another scene that impressed me even more, and even had a certain kind of complex. At the end of the film, Yu Ye, who was holding a broken red umbrella in the heavy rain, smiled so brightly and so happily... The camera is zoomed out, pure red, long handle Umbrella, with a wooden handle, and my red umbrella complex. Of course, I also understand that nostalgia is that kind of state of mind. The red umbrella is just a symbol, giving my feelings a place to attach hope...

    1. Why does the senior who is secretly in love look like a strange slut? 2. Maybe the advantage of a real succubus is that the girl won't wait too long...

Most of the refreshing freshness in Shunji Iwai's films comes from the energy field of youth. And his music always precedes his images, so "April Story", like the prose and poetry, also has the sound of breathing and vitality. Youth is a red umbrella dipped in the rain, and it is also a transparent rain that falls along the umbrella. The thoughts of youth are always flowing, flying, left, and circling. However, all of this has to be appropriate to look good.
