The concept of "home" is split into two concepts in the film, a physical home and a home where one can feel safe inside. I think they mirrored themselves in each other and felt safe.
Those a little overreaction or a way to prove one's existence, to prove oneself through those actions. It is not easy to grasp such a delicate feeling.
Loved the part where Andrew and Samantha buried their little hamsters in the pet cemetery! Samantha said "after you", so Andrew bent down and went in through the garden gate, while Samantha stepped directly over the fence of the small cemetery, and then the two laughed knowingly!
