"New York Gangs" is a gangster movie directed by Martin Scorsese, based on real events in American history in July 1863. The story tells the story of New York, USA, which was just established in the 19th century. Due to land disputes and other reasons, large and small gangs have been established in New York, and the "Irish Dead Rabbit Gang" and the "Native American Gang" are the two largest gangs. Most of the poor Irish immigrants used New York as their first stop to reach the New World. They clashed with the "locals". In a large-scale merger between the "Dead Rabbit Gang" and the "Local Gang", the Irish leader " The priest" was killed by the local leader "The Butcher Bill", and the young son of the "Pastor" Amsterdam escaped. Sixteen years later, at the beginning of the Civil War, Amsterdam returned to the slum "Five Points District". He joined a gang of Irish thieves and was appreciated by Bill the Butcher. His identity was later revealed, and the two sides held another fire merger. The movie is a simple gang fight plus a story of the son avenging his father. But director Martin Scorsese's drunkenness is not about drinking. Just like the design of the film's title, the word "New York" is far greater than the word "gang." What he wanted to shoot was a 19th-century New York style painting, showing how the United States became a country in the bloody conflicts of different ethnicities. In addition to the underground social struggles in the "five-point area," the film has a side line, which is the relationship between different ethnicities and different forces during the American Civil War. At the end of the film, the Irish gangs and the local gangs merged into flames. On the same day, the anti-conscription riot broke out in New York, and the army suppressed it with all-out efforts. The gang members set out to fight with cold weapons and died under the army's artillery and rifles before they even started the fight. In the history of the United States, the record of civilian casualties caused by the event known as the "1863 Conscription Riot" until later 9. 11 events were only broken. In the eyes of director Martin Scorsese, a United States of America that is free from British rule and built on an extensive democratic system is not a complete United States. It can only eliminate the antagonisms and gaps between various ethnic groups and integrate social class conflicts. And contradictions, the United States that has formed tolerance and freedom is the United States that has the modern "American spirit." The advertising slogan in the film is "America was born on the street." There are many shots about the streets in the film: the streets that were stained with dark red after the gang fire and the snow, the muddy streets in the slums, the tidy streets in the rich areas, and the opposite. The streets filled with blood during the conscription riots, and the dark streets filled with dead bodies and candles after the riots. A unified country is rooted in these fragmented streets. The ending is especially profound. The expressionless army used guns to defeat the evil gangsters, which symbolizes that technological advancement has given the state apparatus an overwhelming advantage in force. The people can no longer rely on riots to contend with the state, so the state has control. The power of everything. All the rebels in the country were destroyed. The body in the scene was first lying on the street, then neatly displayed along the street, and finally returned to the deserted mound on the Hudson River. Watching the city on the opposite bank rise day by day, approaching the sky. Martin Scorsese is recognized as one of the most influential film directors in the United States after the war. Together with Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas, he is collectively known as Hollywood 80 Four directors of the era. Most of the themes of his works are about the identity of Italian Americans, crime and salvation in the Catholic sense, violence in American society, and so on. He has won many awards for Best Director at the Academy Awards, the American Golden Globes, the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. "Bill the Butcher" in the film is played by the famous British actor Daniel Day Lewis. He is known as the "Man of Thousand Faces" and "Chameleon" in the film industry. He performed a fascinating role of a negative face with a brilliant look, and transformed the "butcher" into a flesh-and-blood person full of emotional explosiveness and emotional tension. Having seen Daniel Day Lewis’ performances in films such as "My Left Foot", "The Last Mohican" and "The Age of Innocence", it is hard to imagine the vulgar, vicious, fanatical, and sinister in front of me. He is the humorous, stubborn, and shrewd ultra-nationalist. That raise of hands, every move, the way of talking and walking, and even the muttering and spitting of myself, have completely become another real person. We often see this type of villain who always has a strong control and a sense of oppression throughout the show, such as the Caribbean Barbosa and David Jones in the column; for example, Colonel Hans Linda in "Inglourious Basterds"; for example, the police officer in "The Killer Ang"... They can perform the supporting roles vividly, and the protagonist can't be stepped on. From the beginning, this is a great actor. And the protagonist Amsterdam, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, looked pale and feeble. He was extremely vulnerable to the butcher played by Daniel and was killed in seconds! Daniel Day Lewis won the Best Actor Oscar twice for "My Left Foot" in 1990 and "Blood is Coming" in 2008. In 2013, he won the 85th Oscar for "Lincoln". Best Actor, became the first best actor in Oscar history to win the Oscar winner three times. The film "The Gangs of New York" won 10 nominations at the 75th Academy Awards for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay, etc., and became the most popular film at the current Oscar; won the 60th Golden Globe Award for Best Director, Best Original Song Award; Daniel’s brilliant performance in "New York Gangs" won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Association, the 56th British Academy and the 9th American Screen Actors Guild Best Actor, and the 60th Nominated for the Golden Globe Awards and the 75th Academy Awards for Best Actor. The ambition is too great, and the interleaving of the historical background enriches the transmission of the social and political connotation under the gang type form of the film, but it damages the creation of the character image. But I have to say that there are a few scenes that are moving, such as the assassinations and performances in the Chinese Theater, but as a whole they failed to fulfill Martin's high expectations.

At first I wondered why this Italian-born director chose such a grand abolition movement in the United States and the Civil War period as the stage, but only wrote the story of the Irish immigrant gang in one block. It turned out that it was all for the irony of the last scene.

Gangs of New York quotes

  • Amsterdam Vallon: I give you my word, this all will be finished tomorrow.

    Jenny: No, it won't.

  • Bill: My father gave his life, making this country what it is. Murdered by the British with all of his men on the twenty fifth of July, anno domini, 1814. Do you think I'm going to help you befoul his legacy, by giving this country over to them, what's had no hand in the fighting for it? Why, because they come off a boat crawling with lice and begging you for soup.
