Western martial arts

The film scored more than eight points in both the West and my country, which really surprised me. It's cautious to say that this piece didn't get me at all.

Gu Long once had a martial arts novel called "Meteor Butterfly Sword", which portrayed a gangster who could call the wind and call the rain. There is a plot: The gangster was plotted by the villain and was in danger. By the dark river, there is a boat that is connected by the river. The question is, does this ship know that at this moment of the day someone will plot against the boss and wait here? No, the truth is that the boat and the boatman will wait here all day long, until the boatman dies, regardless of whether there is someone plotting the boss. That is to say, a small character like a boatman will be concerned about the safety of the boss, respect the will of the boss, and use his entire life in exchange for possible services to the boss. It can be seen that the prestige of the boss is high and the influence on people is strong.

But the question is, is such a thing possible? Isn't this boatman human? No human emotions? Aren't you tired? Wouldn't it be annoying? Wouldn't you doubt it? Won't you change your mind? What means did the boss use to make him a robot, and the programming generally unswervingly respects the boss's will, so as to take the risk that the boss may never use him and make his life meaningless?

Gu Long did not write clearly, at least did not convince me. He just used this kind of plot to portray the god-like influence or prestige of the boss.

Similar plots are also found in Huang Yi's martial arts novels. Huang Yi often uses a routine when describing beauties, called "the ancient well does not wave", but the heart is rippling. A common plot is that there is a beautiful woman on the stage. The old monk, who was originally cultivated to the point where the ancient well was untouched, couldn't help his heart rippling when he saw this beautiful woman, to complement the beauty of the beautiful woman. But I often think: If it is really a dry well, how can there be fluctuations? So is the beauty of beauty overcoming the old monk's century-old cultivation base, or is the old monk just being old and not old, and his desires are suppressed like dry wood in the sun, just waiting for a little spark? Anyway, Huang Yi didn't convince me.

This film uses the same formula for the portrayal of Mickey, played by Ma Jiao: a person who is extremely shrewd, always predicts the enemy before, and all his enemies are defeated and defeated by him. However, no details, no reason to convince me. The Mickeys I see are always shrewd for no reason, just move their mouths and everything is done.

The title of the film is "Gentlemen", which reminds me of another title called "Nobles". The nobles in our impression are all personable, such as the nobles in ancient China, wearing long-sleeved long clothes, walking slowly and dignifiedly, and their bodies are spotless. So much so that some of us in modern times want to wear retro ancient clothes, and also do the clothes of Chinese aristocrats. But the fact is: the aristocratic style is actually piled up with money, not innate, not without reason. The long-sleeved long coats of nobles are actually not conducive to action, especially work. For example, if you cook in noble clothes, you can't cook anything, you can't even pick vegetables. Nobles can't cook, they can only spend money to hire people to do it. This is the fundamental reason to ensure that nobles walk forever and stay clean.

It's the same with the "gentlemen", well, you can always be smart, I'm sure, but how? How did you get the information, how did you break into the enemy's interior, how did you make careful arrangements, did you have any emergency plans, did you plan for a long time, think carefully, gather together to discuss, so that you can't sleep at night and feel nervous.

The film does not show relevant plots, but only shows a group of personable, wise and powerful characters who can easily defeat the enemy, like gods. This does not convince me, it is too similar to the martial arts novels of Gu Long and Huang Yi.

Also, the movie is too much nonsense. Shows too much cleverness and boring little humor.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion, I believe that many people like this one. But I have to be true to how I feel: this movie sucks!

The Gentlemen quotes

  • Fletcher: I think the time has come for me to introduce you to our queen. A Cockney Cleopatra to Mickey's cowboy Caesar. The only weak link, in his otherwise impregnable armor, is his devotion, his passion, some would say his obsession, with his beauteous lady wife.

  • Mickey Pearson: I like middle age. I like gentrification, private schools, fine wines, and a spoonful of caviar to help my medicine go down. But most importantly, I'm looking forward to spending more time with you.

Rosalind Pearson: Of course you are.
