The film follows Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a New York diamond shop owner who is addicted to gambling, has a shaky marriage and an unfaithful girlfriend. Howard Ratner owes the gambler (Eric Bergson) money, and the thugs keep threatening to make him pay it back. When he bought a multimillion-dollar shipment of rare, uncut Ethiopian opals, he thought his bad luck would come to an end. The stones were meant to be auctioned, but when Boston Celtics superstar Kevin Garnett walked into the gem store hoping to rent the stones because they could bring him luck in the NBA Finals , the situation became more complicated.
