Gossip is not as bad as the director's injury

The first highlight of the film is the performance of Jennifer and his wife, and the second highlight is the biography of the legendary singer Hector, but the directing skills throughout the film are even more impressive. The endless interlacing of time and space, the same period, the different period, the black and white films are intertwined, the subtitles and scenes are superimposed. After the film is halfway through, it becomes a kind of flaw for the viewers.

This is a movie that has been noticed since gossip. Hector from Puerto Rico not only has a legendary voice, but also a legendary life. In spite of his father's objection, he came to New York alone, met a gold medal manager, and became the lead singer of the band. Because the new salsa style became famous in a short period of time, and lived a life of intoxication. Then came drug addiction, which led to AIDS. His relationship with his beloved Butch began to crack, and he didn't have time to spend properly with his son. They maintained their superficial glitz until the mid-80s, after which it all fell apart. His son stole a pistol from his home, was shot in the stomach by his best friend, and tragically died. Just after the funeral, Hector tells Butch that they may never be able to speak again. He listened to the advice of his friends and returned to Puerto Rico to perform, but he was faced with a cold scene that could not be compared with that year. After the show, he saw Butch drinking with other men at the hotel. He came to the balcony and jumped off without thinking too much. There are many fractures in the whole body, and the internal organs are almost incomplete, but they are still alive. In the sense of survival, lived five years.

The film begins with an interview with Butch, at a time when the woman who has suffered the loss of her son and husband has lost much of its brilliance. During the interview, the whole tone was black and white, with Butch smoking a cigarette in a huge room, reminiscing about his past. Those past events are interspersed with gorgeous colors, and there is another layer interspersed in them. Past performances and life are interspersed together. First is a very strong contrast of black and white and color, and then there is a strong and dark contrast in the tone. However, the excessive use of this contrast, coupled with the use of too many image overlays in the description of Hector's rapid rise to fame, makes the entire film look like a translucent body, without the slightest moment of solidity and authenticity.

I love two scenes in the movie. One was the blues singer in a bar paying homage to his idol Hector with his song, which was later performed by Hector in the studio. Another is Hector in Puerto Rico to face the few but loyal fans, he said, I'm a singer, I'm here to sing.

As for the Jennifer couple's performance, it should be said that her husband Anthony is better than her. The state of being loyal to oneself on the stage and restraining oneself as a professional singer, while being unrestrained off the stage, just seeking the stimulation when the mind is numb, are all portrayed with sufficient weight. And Jennifer is always a bright Latin American, and she simply performed a little vicissitudes of life in the fragments of memories.

Let's talk about the songs inside. Almost every song is from the live performance. Since the song itself is in Spanish, there are always special white fonts that appear next to it. The writing of the song and the development of the story are very close. I haven't listened to Hector's song carefully, but I believe it was recreated later.

El cantante quotes

  • Hector Lavoe: I started singing when my mother died. I was 5 years old. My father believed that my pain was my voice.

  • Hector Lavoe: You ever seen a coqui sing? You've never seen one because you can't see them. They're there. You can hear them, but you can't see them. And they only sing one song. And it's two notes- Just like that, all their life, their whole life. They're born to do that. And they live everywhere in Puerto Rico. And they can't survive anywhere else in the world.
