When the cast and crew of "Little Women" came out, she basically set the tone for her feminism. "Lady Bird" female director Greta Gerwig and Emma Watson joined, from the very beginning, the expectations of this play on its social value seemed to be far greater than her artistic value.
As a result, as soon as the Oscar nomination came out, there were endless voices of grievances for the female director. I feel that the real emphasis on female directors should start from the gender factor. As far as the movie "Little Women" is concerned, I think it's just a relatively well-rounded movie.
There are indeed many bright spots in the movie. The first is her narrative structure. This kind of time travels back and forth without making people feel chaotic, and the contrast today gives the movie a sense of the changes of the times. The movie is restoring the time. The scene was really well done. The crew went to Boston, a famous historic city in the United States, to film the scene. Coupled with the Oscar-winning costume design, the scene during the Civil War was well restored. It is a visually beautiful movie, and at the beginning of the movie, it can bring people back to that chaotic era.
But the biggest problem with this movie is that all the plot stories are shallow, but there is a lack of moving behind the story. Most of the characters' personalities come from their respective endings. The novel itself can make people think through the delicate description of the heart, but the movie can only be expressed by the characters' expressions, actions and words. The director needs to express too many stories, and the short story is too short. In just 2 hours, it is not easy to explain the life of the 4 sisters clearly and to highlight their respective personalities.
Greta Gerwig should belong to the new era, so the relevance of the era of "Lady Bird" is far greater than that of "Little Women". "Little Women" lacks the strength of the dialogue, and is not enough for the challenges women encountered at that time. Restoration is also limited to visual experience. The inner struggle behind the 4 sisters is limited to the mapping of contemporary people’s own lives. This is why the most intuitive feeling after watching the movie is to listen to a piece of home life. This bottle of aged wine has a new taste.
