no man's arena

The English and French, who are separated by water, have many differences in character. The meticulousness and rigor of the British made them create cool and wise detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Poirot, while the same reasoning story was interpreted by the romantic and casual French, but it became more and more exciting.

A sudden heavy snow trapped eight women at home, and in the same house, a man was stabbed in the back and died on his bed. Around the cause of the man's death, several women with different motives began to suspect each other, and in the process of guessing and reasoning, these seemingly pure and elegant women gradually revealed another unknown side.

The heavy snow arranged by the director at the beginning of the film should have other intentions besides confining all the scenes of the story in a closed space. Under the cover of white snow, the dirty world becomes beautiful, the dark relationship becomes pure, and everything is shrouded in an illusory beauty. But the ground after the snow melts is destined to be a mess of sewage. This is the real world. This is probably the subtext that the director wants to tell us. The entire film of "Eight Beauty and Thousands of Charm" is all about female protagonists, and the only male character is only the back from beginning to end. But in this river and lake without men, the coldness and gloom of women make us feel as cold as snow.

  • Catherine: Suzon, I forgot one thing. I heard a strange sound. I looked through Augustine's keyhole, and I saw her standing at the mirror with something shiny. I thought nothing of it, but now I'm sure she was sharpening a knife!

Augustine: You liar! I was holding my mother-of-pearl comb and cleaning it.

    Gaby: At 3:00 am?

    Augustine: Combs never sleep!

  • Suzon: Didn't you say you saw no-one?

Augustine: I forgot. I went for a drink.

Gaby: Or a prowl around Marcel's room! What happened?

Catherine: You'd know if you still slept with Dad.

Gaby: I'm being judged by my own child!

Pierrette: That's why I never had any.

Gaby: Just admit no man ever asked you to.
