Alternative fantasy

High Tide Coast is a quirky and offbeat fantasy movie. It is very clear that all the fantastic places are the lonely dreams of the little girl. After watching this film or in the process of watching it, the audience will definitely feel a little uncomfortable, because the way the film is presented is so unacceptable. Unlike "Pan's Labyrinth", which regrettably told the audience at the end that all the beautiful dreams in this film are just the imagination of the protagonist, "Rising Tide Shore" told us all this from the beginning. We can't see that strange and beautiful world, the bottom of the sea, the shark monster, the captain, the witch, all this belongs to the lonely little girl. Although the unpopulated place had golden grass and blue sky, it was desolate, and only the imaginary world gave Rose comfort. The audience can see that she is addicted to this world where she has everything and she is happy. The video only tells us that she was happy as a result, but doesn't show why. There was a moment when the world was sinking, the picture really became the bottom of the sea, everything was floating, there were seaweeds and fish, the doll's head became alive and communicated with Rose, and they traveled together to find the new Dickens. I wish I could keep watching this fantasy world that only belongs to Rose until the end of the film and she dies in reality, like all black fairy tales like "The Match Girl". But the director is cruel, and the sound of parking makes that world belong to Rose alone again. We can only guess from her laughter what kind of wonderful world she saw, watching Rose, who was lonely and dreaming, and sighed softly, it's so fucking dark. It doesn't matter what Rose sees, just like the little girl who saw the roast goose, even if she saw herself eating the king's feast, we can only feel more sad for her freezing to death on the street.
There are only three people in the whole movie, Rose, Dickens, and Dell. There is no normal person. Rose's delusions and Dickens probably also have delusions and polio sequelae. As for the beekeeper, Dell, is simply a violent and mysterious witch. Together, they infused the film with a frenzied Chen score, making the "reality" in this film also show some magical flavors, to make up for the lack of the stingy director who refused to show the audience's curiosity about Rose's world. Perhaps, both Dell and Dickens live in a magical world, a world that only belongs to them. Like Rose, they don't feel that the world in other people's eyes may be different from what they see.
The film has been very quiet, you can hear the whistling wind, quietly brushing the golden grass. The picture is beautiful, except for the people. The most used color makes people crazy, such a black fairy tale actually uses a lot of the golden yellow of the sun. Think about that warm color that was spilled like turning over a paint bucket in "A Beautiful Day", but it showed such a completely different effect. While watching, I heard the crow's cry, but the ominous bird never showed its shadow. At that time, I was reminded of Van Gogh's posthumous work, a few panicked crows flying over the golden wheat field. Suddenly I felt that this painting was the perfect way to explain the film. Could it be that the director or the author of the original book was greatly influenced by it.
The most commendable is, of course, the superb performance of Rose's Jennifer Tilly. God, it's really hard to believe that such a small child can grasp such a complex image so well. Not to mention that it played Rose and her Dolls with different personalities alone, and not to mention the many aspects of Rose's character, just the complicated look at the end of the film has already explained the little girl's talent. Such an uncomfortable black\gray film (film noir seems to be a proper term, of course not referring to those, here is a misuse), it is her performance that makes the film lively and attractive, making people feel I couldn't help staring at her frown and smile, speculating about her fate, her ending.
I keep this movie, but I don't recommend it, it's too personal.

Tideland quotes

  • Queen Gunhilda: It's your daddy's fault you were the way you were, not mine. 'Cause I loved you... lip smackin' little junkie baby. Irritable and hyperactive, you was, just twitchin' and spasms and convulsions. Your daddy blew smoke in your face to keep you quiet; you know that, mm hmm. I think it what damaged you, well don't blame me, cuz. I breast fed you forever... Jeliza Rose you know I love you, don't you? I'm sorry baby, I'm gonna do something real nice for you real soon some day, I promise.... What the fuck are you doin'? How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from my chocolate, you little bitch?... Oh honey, I don't want you to leave me, Jeliza Rose. I can't get by without you, Jeliza Rose.

  • Noah: [frantically] It was the methadone that killed her. Should have kept her on the junk. I should have just cut her dose and kept her on it. Now she's dead and... I don't have a car.

Jeliza-Rose: Please don't be sad. Now we can eat all her choc bars. Look...
