There are only three people in the whole movie, Rose, Dickens, and Dell. There is no normal person. Rose's delusions and Dickens probably also have delusions and polio sequelae. As for the beekeeper, Dell, is simply a violent and mysterious witch. Together, they infused the film with a frenzied Chen score, making the "reality" in this film also show some magical flavors, to make up for the lack of the stingy director who refused to show the audience's curiosity about Rose's world. Perhaps, both Dell and Dickens live in a magical world, a world that only belongs to them. Like Rose, they don't feel that the world in other people's eyes may be different from what they see.
The film has been very quiet, you can hear the whistling wind, quietly brushing the golden grass. The picture is beautiful, except for the people. The most used color makes people crazy, such a black fairy tale actually uses a lot of the golden yellow of the sun. Think about that warm color that was spilled like turning over a paint bucket in "A Beautiful Day", but it showed such a completely different effect. While watching, I heard the crow's cry, but the ominous bird never showed its shadow. At that time, I was reminded of Van Gogh's posthumous work, a few panicked crows flying over the golden wheat field. Suddenly I felt that this painting was the perfect way to explain the film. Could it be that the director or the author of the original book was greatly influenced by it.
The most commendable is, of course, the superb performance of Rose's Jennifer Tilly. God, it's really hard to believe that such a small child can grasp such a complex image so well. Not to mention that it played Rose and her Dolls with different personalities alone, and not to mention the many aspects of Rose's character, just the complicated look at the end of the film has already explained the little girl's talent. Such an uncomfortable black\gray film (film noir seems to be a proper term, of course not referring to those, here is a misuse), it is her performance that makes the film lively and attractive, making people feel I couldn't help staring at her frown and smile, speculating about her fate, her ending.
I keep this movie, but I don't recommend it, it's too personal.
