The story is surreal, a killer, and a beautiful female partner who never meets, a homeless man who can't speak. Naturally, there are various other characters, however, everyone is equally lonely.
Loneliness brings dark humor. The killer met his elementary school classmates, the homeless pried open the door of the slaughterhouse late at night to massage the pigs, and so on, which made the audience laugh at one time, but it was a bit bitter. ——Isn't the loneliest person always laughing?
Of course, there are heart-warming moments in the film: Takeshi Kaneshiro forced the family to eat ice cream, and then Takeshi Kaneshiro's voiceover sounded: "I believe that they will be very happy when they recall this day in the future."; Jin and the woman they adore side by side Sitting at the bar, the rain streaks kept streaking across the glass outside the window, and the two of them didn't say a word.
But in the end, it is still lonely. even warm. Li Jiaxin also said in the final monologue at the end of the film, "At that moment, I felt so warm." - Still lonely.
What I'm referring to in particular is the description of loneliness in the film, which is very flavorful. Loneliness is the constant theme of all Wong Kar-wai's films, but it has never had both heavy and light ends like this one. And the reason is that, I thought, it was the character played by Takeshi Kaneshiro.
Since you can't speak, you don't have to speak. Because he can't speak, there must be a lot of monologues that jump out of the picture. These are precisely two interesting features of Wong Kar-wai's films: the characters have fewer lines and more psychological monologues. Because this character can't speak, everything seems so natural.
At the same time, it also brings a sense of humor, the person does not seem to experience much loneliness, on the contrary, he is very happy. He knows how to play with loneliness. He appears to be a secondary character, but is actually the narrator of the story.
I really admire Wong Kar-wai for being able to think of this method and create such a character. Maybe his loneliness is really endless, but this is probably the most wonderful way.
