an acceptable remake

When Superman Returns began, and the oh-so-familier theme song started to drum up in the theater, my blood was boiling. I was almost as excited as when I went to watch the final episode of Star Wars. Superman movies are part of those late 70s-80s iconic movies that everyone must have seen and loved. It's just so exciting to see him returning to the big screen.

A lot of people are dubious of the actor they picked to fill Christopher Reeve's shoes. Indeed, there's not much acting on Brandon Routh's part. All he had to do was just stand there, look, talk and smile like Reeve, and the audiences will take it all in. In some angles, he does look stunningly like Reeve. However, I'm not so sure about having Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. Her brown hair looks fake, and her acting is totally lacking, thus making it difficult for us to believe that she can be a pulitzer price winning journalist.

Onto the story itself. Lex Luthor is back and trying to take over the world once again; this time, his master plan has something to do with crystals that he found from Superman's North Pole fortress. Nothing original, but just seeing all these familiar characters was satisfying enough. Most of the movie is action-filled, but there are some parts with ultra cheesy dialogs.(of course, most are lovey-dovey oh-I-secretly-still-love-you I-wish-I-can-tell-you-my-secret scenes between superman and Lois) But overall, I'd say this is a pretty successful remake. It cannot be measured up to the original movies, but it is definitely worth it to see.

Superman Returns quotes

  • Lex Luthor: This crystal may seem unremarkable, but then so is the seed of a redwood tree. It's how our mutual friend in tights made his Arctic getaway spot. Cute, but a little small for my taste.

  • [Newspaper headline reads: "SUPERMAN IS DEAD"]

Richard White: It's a little morbid, Perry.

    Perry White: Always be prepared.
