tear off the veil

Buñuel's films are like performance art in the long history of film, eclectic, self-contained and obscure. This movie must be the best of them all. A group of dignitaries and dignitaries in the upper class had a dinner party in the villa. Before, during and after the meal, everyone was polite and turbulent at the same time. The hostess cheats with the guests behind the back of the host, and the guests secretly mock others and so on. Afterwards, they were trapped in the house. Interestingly, all the servants left the house before dinner began, and it was clear that Buñuel was trying to make it clear to the audience that the film was about ripping off the veil of bourgeois high society hypocrisy by creating a dilemma. So we saw these guests gradually go from being polite to hurting each other, returning to savagery, and releasing their identities. One of the female guests had two chicken feet in her purse, and the other female guest had the hallucination of a hand crawling on her body, and then slashed at that hand and nearly hit the other guest. These surreal passages all show that they are unable to continue to control their gradual beastly state in a state of distress and tension. The metaphor of sheep and bear is also worth pondering. After a few days, after a lot of arguments and fights, they finally found a way out of the house. They re-enacted where they were and what they said after the dinner, and then they all came together to end the hypocritical and friendly conversation and said: go home! It turns out they can leave, ironically.

Finally, a group of them came to the church to pray, and ended up being trapped in the church with others, including the priest. At this moment, a group of docile sheep ran towards the church. Outside the church, police used guns to drive away the assembled citizens. I think Buñuel wants to start criticizing and tearing down the veil of religious hypocrisy.

The Exterminating Angel quotes

  • Raúl: You led us into this trap. You made us the butt of this cruel joke.

Edmundo Nobile: I have, my friend? By inviting you to dinner? By opening my doors to you?

Raúl: Exactly. You called us one by one to come for dinner after the opera. Such a cordial invitation. "I'd be honored if you would..." et cetera. We could have been sound asleep at home or in some brothel, instead of here.

  • Sergio Russell: I'm happy that I won't see the extermination.
