To never have been born may be the greatest boon of all—Sophocles

You open Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment for your second long reading. I'm rewatching "Crimes and Misdemeanors" by Woody Allen (1989, Hong Kong translation "Happiness is too short", Taiwan translation "Love and Sin", Hong Kong translation is really off topic) , I have always thought that this film is the representative work of Aaron Living, and even if I rewatch it, the interest is still there.

What's the matter? I'm suddenly interested in the issue of sin.

After watching Woody Allen's "Match Point" (2005), we all found different movies and books, hoping to discover more and think more.

"Match Point" is a movie about "lucky", the ball rolls on the top of the net, forward, wins; back, loses. No wonder Aaron Live thinks ─ ─ The man who said "I'd rather be lucky than good" saw deeply into life. The

protagonist, Chris, is a tennis coach who met the high-class Hewett family through his student Tom. Rich lady Chloe Hewett fell in love with Chris. After the two got married, Chris gained both fame and fortune, but he was not satisfied with the marriage. Instead, Chris fell in love with second-tier actress Nola.

Just like "Crime and Misconduct", the mistress and the hero are always entangled, the hero can't leave a happy family, but the mistress is madly chasing after him. As a result, the male protagonist was forced to kill his mistress. In "Match Point", Chris killed Nola and her biological child, as well as innocent strangers, but was picked up by others as evidence of the murder, and Chris escaped from the French Open.

Chris dreamed back in the middle of the night and saw Nola, he could only read out the famous line of Sok Falls, lamenting the bitter taste of life. Human righteousness is not enough, and everything is left to God's righteousness to be revealed.

"Match Point" discusses "luck". There are indeed many Blind Chances in life. Even if there is no preparation and no design, the future may be greatly changed by an opportunity. To do or not to be an errand, to answer or not to answer a phone call, to go or not to walk a path, to go or not to go to an art exhibition, fate will come at any time, it may be smooth sailing from now on, or it may be forever. Although people have free will and autonomy, the number of days is unpredictable, and in the end they can only use the word Faith to smooth things out.

Woody Allen's profoundness is not only to see through the decisiveness of fate in the world, but also to see through the problem of justice brought about by sin. The Chinese have always believed that "good and evil will be rewarded in the end, if not, the hour has not yet come." This sentence somewhat implies the existence of divine righteousness. Because of sin, there will always be misfortunes in the world, but external transcendental power will come at the right time. One by one, some people believe that "Vengeance is mine, I will repay", and everything is left to the final judgment.

For modern people, this is a confusion - there are laws, everyone is responsible for their own actions, and there is no need for God's justice. However, in fact, misfortune still exists in the human world, and some people shouted "Heaven has no eyes" because of this, and even thought that justice does not exist, that life is nothing, and people must resist everything.

It's getting late at night, you are still reading "Crime and Punishment", I picked up "The Brothers Karamazov", on the other side of justice and judgment, Dostoyevsky also cares about forgiveness, the protagonist of the book Alyosha to his brother Ivan said: "You said just now: Is there a person in the world who can forgive and has the right to forgive? But there is such a person, who can forgive everyone and everything, and forgive everything on behalf of everything, because he has for everything People and everything have shed their innocent blood." Then, the atheist Ivan said the famous "Religious Inquisitor" monologue, which made people doubt the possibility of forgiveness again and again. Anyway, in a world without God, everything Murder is a no-brainer.

Match Point quotes

  • Christopher "Chris" Wilton: I think it's important to be lucky in anything.

Chloe Hewett Wilton: Well, I don't believe in luck. I believe in hard work.

Christopher "Chris" Wilton: Oh, hard work is mandatory, but, I think everybody's afraid to admit what a big part luck plays. I mean, it seems scientists are - confirming more and more that all existence is here by blind chance. No purpose, no design.

  • Tom Hewett: What was it the the vicar used to say? "Despair is the path of least resistance." It was something odd, wasn't it? It was very strange.

Christopher "Chris" Wilton: I think that faith is the path of least resistance.

    Tom Hewett: Oh, God.

Chloe Hewett Wilton: Oh, God! Can we change the subject, please?
