"Twin Melinda"
The opening scene of 2004's "Twin Melinda" is exactly the same as that of 1984's "Danny Rose." "Danny Rose" is a group of comedians sitting together in a restaurant to talk about the story of the legendary businessman Danny Rose; "Twin Melinda" is a group of comedians sitting together in a restaurant to talk about the story of a tragicomedy double script.
The story of a female uninvited guest is told in a two-line tragicomedy to see if it is a tragedy or a comedy. Woody Allen gave Radha Mitchell the best female role of his directorial career to date, Melinda. Think about what a rare opportunity to show your acting skills when you can play a leading role, a tragedy, and a comedy in one movie at the same time. Mitchell did a really good job, both in tragedy and comedy, and her roles were wonderful.
Woody's 10-year movie from 1995 to 2004 can be said to have few masterpieces, and this period was obviously a low period for his career. Twin Melinda premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain in September 2004, but was not released in the US and UK until March 2005. The film received a mediocre response, and some of the criticisms of the film were interesting. Let's take an article from the Englishman Jason Solomons:
In an article titled "How Woody Became a Vulgar Writer," Wesley Morris wrote in the Boston Globe: "Ellen has grown tired of creating complex characters. He's filming now. Movies seem to be just out of habit, and the love, creativity and energy he used to have for the work has been lost." Florence Colambaney, author of Woody Allen in the "Masters of Cinema" series, commented on " Twin Melinda is a continuation of the "slack old-fashioned and cynical" series, and the lead star looks like a remake of Charlotte Rampling's Doria in "Once Upon a Time in the Stars."
I think anyone laughing at this film is lacking insight. "Twin Melinda" is experimental in its creative narrative structure, a testament to Woody, who has been numb for nearly 10 years, once again creating a new theme. Therefore, "Twin Melinda" is a sign of the awakening of the creative giant Woody Allen. He finally brings some fresh energy to his narrative film: an interesting and moving story, like a spring sprout sprouting in the frozen soil of winter, the miraculous spring is coming. The reason why "Twin Melinda" wasn't a great production was because it lacked a great deal of drama. Woody will bring us the ultimate drama in his next film, "Match Point."
Twin Melinda was a turning point in Woody's film and a sign of the awakening of great creativity. It was Woody's last film in New York in his directorial career. This little old man who stubbornly stayed in Manhattan, New York, suddenly set off for Europe. After filming in Europe, he returned to New York in 2009 for "Anything Goes". After years of accumulation and precipitation, Woody finally ushered in the second spring of his career, and we finally ushered in Woody's masterpiece again. Next movie, the great Game Point.
