Another evolution of Quentin's script

Serious spoilers

I have always claimed to be a fan of Quentin because I was completely shocked when I saw Pulp Fiction for the first time. I never thought that the movie could be made in this way. After deconstructing and splitting the script, Quentin should not be the first to do this, but he made me understand that the movie is more than just visual fun. From then on , Watching a movie is not a simple entertainment for me. I really admire Quentin’s experience from filming. He works in a video rental shop. Because of his work, he can read countless films. It is well known that Quentin often learns from other movies. Of course, he just copied it directly in his own words. He is a real A movie fan knows what he needs and what the audience wants. His mind will always pop up the segment he saw from the video tape late at night and turn it into his own. This is terrible.

After watching "Liberated Jiang Ge", I feel that Quentin is really suitable for Western films. When I learned that his next work is a Western film, I naturally looked forward to it. The feelings of "The Hateful Eight" and "Jiang Ge Freed" are completely different. The latter has a strong Quentin style, but it is still not out of the traditional Western feel. If I have to say it, the feeling that "The Hateful Eight" brings me may be more like his own starring in "A Dawn", Quentin borrows the shell of a western film to carry out a carnival party that belongs only to his bloody killing. Those who have watched "A Dawn" should think that the first half of the movie is a crime film, and the second half of the film style is transformed into a b-level film with monsters flying across. The image of this absurdity is profound. There will not be such a major reversal, but the feeling of difference before and after is still more obvious.

The drama of this film is very strong. The actors' performance chants, the setting of the scenes, and of course Quentin's favorite chapter format can all be reflected. The main scene of the film is a classic closed space setting of a wooden house surrounded by a blizzard, which is easily reminiscent of Agatha's mystery novel (and there is indeed a reasoning part in the film). Although the title is "The Evil Eight", there are nine characters in the house, namely: a bounty hunter nicknamed "The Hangman" and his female prisoner, a black bounty hunter who was a colonel of the Northern Army, and a new officer on his way to office The sheriff of, the four-man coachman in front of him, the veteran general of the Southern Army who went to make a tombstone for his missing son, the Mexican who represented the shop, the hangman who was in charge of the execution, and the cowboy who traveled alone. The contradictions between the characters in the first half of the movie are very complicated. These contradictions exist between almost everyone in the grocery store. This makes the atmosphere of the movie always very tense, but the relationship between the characters is restrained at this time. For example, the "hangman", the executioner, the sheriff, and the female prisoner are related to each other in identity; the "hangman" felt that there was an internal response to rescue female prisoners in the house, he trusted the black colonel and the coachman, and suspected the cowboy and the executioner; the black colonel was in Doubts about the identity of the Mexican; ethnically speaking, black colonels and generals and sheriffs are hostile to each other; politically speaking, the hangman and black colonels are northern supporters, the sheriffs and generals are southern supporters, and black colonels are He even confronted the general on the battlefield, and if he wanted to kill the general, this would involve judicial issues, and the executioner and the sheriff would not sit idly by. As a result, the nine of them were unable to break the subtle stability formed by these numerous contradictions at will, and even prepared to be trapped in a blizzard for two or three days.

And will Quentin keep this embarrassing atmosphere going on? of course not. The black colonel acted first. He used the most vicious method I could imagine, perhaps in an unprecedented way in film history, to stimulate the general to pick up a pistol and shoot him in self-defense. At this time, the narration sounded (it sounds like Quentin himself, I feel like watching the director’s commentary), telling us that when everyone’s attention was attracted by the commotion just now, one of them was poisoned by coffee. . At this moment, the atmosphere of the movie is tense. I don't know who will drink coffee or whether he will die. In this speculation, the "hangman" and the coachman drank coffee and died violently. In this way, the previously established balance relationship was instantly broken by the poison killing, and the black colonel, as the only gunman, quickly took control of the situation. The only person he trusted was the sheriff, because the latter escaped before drinking coffee. But what the black colonel first began to explore was another question he had been skeptical about, and that was whether the Mexican had killed the owner of this grocery store. After reasoning, it was discovered that he was indeed related to the disappearance of the owner, so the black colonel cleanly killed the Mexican and blew his head. When he turned his head and prepared to start looking for the murderer, the camera moved down, and someone under the floor said: "Say goodbye to your dandan." Quentin once again blew up the other's dandan, and let In the second half of the film, there is another development.

The movie then explained that the executioners, cowboys, sheriffs, Mexico and others who were in the house were all following the female prisoner’s brother to rescue her gang. Her brother was a gang leader with a reward of more than 10,000 yuan. They killed everyone in the grocery store except the passing general, leaving an old man to increase credibility. After being prepared, they each played their own roles, while the female prisoner’s brother hid in the basement, and then blasted the black colonel’s eggs. At this time, the character relationships and contradictions created before the movie were completely overthrown and turned into a game between the sheriff, the black colonel and the remaining gang members. So I have a look back then The feeling of "A Dawn Is Coming" is also that the contradictory relationship created in the first half of the film has been completely overturned, and the second half of the film began to kill. At this time, although they both had weapons, they were seriously injured. They first called out the brother who was hiding in the basement. Just when the brother and sister looked at each other affectionately, they shot the brother's head and exploded with the brain. Face. Quentin never gave the little hypocrites a chance. When I saw this scene, I stopped laughing for a long time and did a great job. The contradictory relationship between the characters in the second half became simple, so Quentin chose the way of constantly appearing unexpected situations in the development of the plot. First, the female prisoner and the other gang members tried to separate the two of them, using their own dead and dying members' bounty as a bait, and the remaining members ambushing in the town as a threat, to induce the sheriff to kill the black colonel. But before they were finished, the black colonel shot the executioner and then killed the cowboy before he pulled out the pistol hidden under the table and shot him. Just when the colonel wanted to continue killing the female prisoner, the pistol ran out of bullets. At this time, only the sheriff had a gun in his hand. The female prisoner tried to continue to persuade the sheriff, but was unexpectedly rejected. Based on the contradictions between the two of them in terms of race and politics in the first half, even the black colonel was surprised by this result. He was worried about his plan to kill each other first. But just when he thought he could breathe a sigh of relief, the sheriff actually fainted due to excessive blood loss. He was lying on the bed because the egg was blown up and could not move. The moment the female prisoner got the gun, she was shot down by the sober sergeant. Finally, at the suggestion of the black colonel (this section Quentin used the method of combining the close-range and distant characters separately in a clear focus lens at the same time in a frame, so that there is no primary and secondary distinction in the frame. It appears in the movie), the sheriff performed his duties for the first time and the left and back, sentenced the female prisoner to hang, and fulfilled the belief in "judicial justice" insisted by the "hangman". In the end, while the dying two were waiting to die, the sheriff asked to see the letter from Lincoln held by the black colonel who had been personally debunked before. After reading it, he lamented that the end of the letter was very touching like the previous "Hangman", just as the two of them seemed to be the most unlikely combination of reconciliation before they ended up leaning on each other and waiting to die.

Although the film maintains Quentin's consistent chapter format, it does not make a big fuss about the editing sequence. It simply uses the flashback technique to divide the film into two parts. The plot is still advancing with Quentin’s words. At the beginning of the film, the dialogue between the black police chief and the coachman can pull the audience into Quentin’s rhythm. The characters in Quentin's movies often start to talk about their own views and opinions, or serious nonsense, but I think only Quentin can write these dialogues so attractive. The characters in the film are basically the old faces in Quentin's movies. Everyone is very stable from accent to acting. The feeling of acting with a little harder strengthens the sense of drama in the movie. However, Michael Madsend’s presence in the film is always low. Of course, this is also related to his role in the movie (the role he plays), but when he chases and kills the escaped clerk with warm music, it seems to make me look at it again. When Mr. Jin cut off the police’s ear while dancing, the situation in the movie when he confronted each other and suspected the inner ghost also reminded me of "Falling Water Dog". The difference is that there is still Mr. Fan who survived in "Falling Water Dog" and "The Evil Eight" The characters that appeared in "are all dead.

Quentin is a relatively low-production director. Although his personal style is very strong, it can still be seen that each of his works is changing. Now he doesn't have to rely on nonlinear narrative to show off his skills, but only rely on the characters, contradictions and dialogues of relatively complex characters to show us a wonderful story. It is very lucky to be able to watch his continuous evolution in each movie. The only regret is that Quentin has made a lot of efforts to add a sense of ritual during the screening of "The Hateful Eight" in the cinema, but we have no chance. Feel it in the cinema. I look forward to more opportunities in the future. Just like the introduction of "Liberated Jiang Ge", I can see more of Quentin's works in the cinema.

Quentin is really a storyteller. His stories are very detailed and his characters are full of vitality and personality. I just like his easy way to lay out the details and atmosphere! This film should not be translated into "Eight Hateful Men", but should be called "Eight People Who Hate Each Other" or "Eight People Who Hate Each Other"... The most interesting part of the film is that the first black and the white that hate each other are finally turned into At the turn of life, it can be regarded as an anti-western western.

Does Quentin have any childhood shadows? Why do you like to explode other people's chickens and eggs so much?

Oswaldo Mobray: [smiles] Yes, I do believe Judy did say something about the best coffee in the world!

Minnie Mink: [laughs] Well, I don't know 'bout all that. But I'll tell ya what it is: it's hot and it's strong and it's good! And in this snow it sure enough warms your ass up!

  • Major Marquis Warren: Beggin' for his life, your boy told me his whole Life Story. And YOU, was in that story General. And when I knew me I had the son, of the Bloody Nigger Killer of Baton Rouge, I knew me I was gonna have some fun! It was COLD the day I killed your boy. And I don't mean snowy mountain in Wyoming cold... Colder than that. And on that cold day, with your boy at the business end of my gun barrel... I made him STRIP. Right down to his bare ass. Then I told him to start walkin'. I walked his naked ass for two hours... 'fore the cold collapsed him. Then he commits to beggin' again. But this time, he wasn't beggin' to go home. He knew he'd never see his home again. And he wasn't beggin' for his life neither, 'cause he knew that was long gone. All he wanted, was a BLANKET. Now don't judge your boy too harshly, General. You ain't never been cold as your boy was that day. You'd be surprised; what a man that cold, would-do-for-a-blanket. You wanna know what your boy did? I pulled my BIG, BLACK, PECKER outta my pants. And I made him crawl in the snow on all fours over to it. Then I grabbed a handful of that black hair at the back of his head... And I stuck my Big Black Johnson right down his goddamn throat! And it was fulla' blood... so it was warm. Oh, you bet your sweet ass it was warm. And Charles Chester Smithers sucked on that warm black dingus for as loong as he could. Hahahaahaha! Startin' to see pictures, ain't ya?
