Some thoughts and discussions about this new work

It is still two years away from November 2019. Huge electronic screens can already be embedded in the entire building surface, various aircrafts ascend to the sky, trains become high-speed trains, buildings and bridges are full of smog. Of course, the copy has not yet appeared, but virtual reality has been developed in full swing. Or maybe, cloners have long existed among us, those comrades and fans who criticize neatly chanting slogans... are they real people?

Now that the sequel is out, 2049, thirty-two years later, is a different look. I can't help but look forward to the future. But I don't want to look forward to this kind of future. "Blade Runner" has been carrying a deeper humanistic topic than the shell of science fiction since its birth. The sequel "Blade Runner 2049" is more than cyberpunk and technological spectacle. It still carries a literary reflection. Utopia is similar to "future novels" like Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale". In the movie, plants no longer grow, insects are used to make protein, new social operation and maintenance orders... all have strong warning significance. In fact, no subject is more suitable for carrying the theme of dystopia than science fiction. So the future in the movie is not good.

This unpleasant focus on the male protagonist K has fulfilled the most profound tragedy of the film. His body is not only entangled with the old philosophical question "Who am I, am I real", but also tries to take care of the real society. The current real situation of human beings. You see, the director is always using a long-range lens to highlight the loneliness of the male protagonist in the face of technology. As for the answer and the attitude of the creator, perhaps only Nabokov who wrote "Dark Fire" can answer. This book became the key.

Regarding this new work, my favorite characters are Joi, the virtual girlfriend of the male protagonist K, and Luv, the female official of Leto. They sound like joy and love, a pair of physical and spiritual relationships surrounding the male protagonist K: no With Joy, is human love still love? How should we treat those who murdered Joy in the name of Love? What are the views of the creators expressed in the plot connection between the hero K, Joi and Luv?

However, even though its photography is a god-level, Villeneuve-style narrative restraint catches the heartstrings, but because it is too neat and commercial, I have a sense of distance to it, I think it is not as pure as the original. The current environment is too heavy on business and economic recovery, which has made us no longer pay attention to philosophy and literature. Our philosophy and literature are at a trough, and scripts will not have great depth of thought. Moreover, in the modern civilization impacted by science and technology, we urgently need a new philosophy to guide our creation.

There are many problems in the film: the depth lines that can be explored are messy; the general audience is worried that many lines are too full; a full ending; and some supporting characters are excessively incomplete... In terms of technique, the sequel is a flawless handsome guy. However, the original audio-visual is a rough, durable, and characteristic second-looking guy, and the time difference gives it a sense of antiquities that is superior to numbers.

The history of art is the history of artists. Each artist is different, so art itself should be flawed. We pursue the exquisiteness and neatness of commercial vases, but the vases that can enter the museum must have something unique that cannot be replicated. This is inevitable. Judging whether a commercial film is good or not is neat or not, and judging the artistic value depends on whether the taste is lost due to excessive neatness.

Objects that look too good make people unbearable to have sexual desire. Without sexual desire, one cannot think about philosophy.

This film of 168min, if I remember correctly, only "Avatar" and "The Hobbit" have been almost as long in a few years. As reminded by friends on Weibo, there is also "Interstellar Crossing", and the other "Golden Age" is too intemperate. "Blade Runner 2049" can be regarded as a rare science fiction spectacle in domestic commercial theaters. The process of looking at it doesn't feel long, but taking notes and thinking, it passed by in a flash. I strongly recommend to watch it several times. As for whether it is a god-made work, let's leave it to time.

Extended Reading

Low gimmick, high vibe. The first episode is perfectly extended in terms of plot, theme and style. The romance with a virtual girlfriend is the expansion of the first episode more than 30 years later, and it is also the most moving part. The protagonist is still a double-marginal person, heart-rending to fulfill the excitement of others, perhaps this is the real tragedy. The photography and soundtrack are not inferior to the previous episode. It's a pity that probably because there was no Chinese capital injection in this episode, Japan and South Korea had the upper hand.

When I walked out of the theater in the middle of the night, it was raining heavily after a long absence.
