It’s an outlier in a war movie, but it’s a normal middle-class work in a disaster movie.

The German army did not show up in this film, and its role was equivalent to a natural disaster. Because the entire plot is about the protagonists running and running, and heroes rescue, the story frame is actually a disaster film.
Combining the two, Nolan shot a new style of World War II movies. It does not have the bloody blood that will linger in future war films of "Private Ryan", nor does it take the usual path of romanticism or reflection on human nature.
Then, Nolan's iconic "timeline crossover" was added.
Until now, I don’t know if telling stories out of chronological order is a style or a personality disorder? Does he usually speak like this? Can this problem be overcome with medicine?
In short, this story is divided into three timelines.

The first is the soldiers on the beach waiting to board the boat. From the perspective of the handsome boy Tommy, he talked about his desperate and defeated attempts to cross the sea within a week.
Before he got to the beach, he encountered the group annihilation, and then picked up a taciturn comrade-in-arms. The two wanted to get on the Red Cross ship and watched the ship sink. After boarding another ship and being blown up again, Tommy rescued his comrades. Finally got on a stranded ship and was used by the Germans to shoot targets. When the tide was high, the boat turned into a sieve, and the silent comrades were caught in the water and sank. Swim to the next ship, seeing it sink and almost burned to death by an oil spill. Finally boarded the rescue team Dawson's boat.

The second line is the story of Dawson and his son going to the opposite shore to pick up people in one day. They took the kid from the same town, George, resolutely sailed into the artillery fire. On the road, Soldier A and Pilot B who had a nervous breakdown were saved. Finally, he returned to his hometown with a boat of soldiers who had suffered a long time.

The third line is the air struggle of the pilots within an hour. A three-person formation consisting of Pilot B, Pilot C, and Teacher Tang set off. Pilot C was hit quickly, and pilot B crashed after a lot of hard work, and was rescued by Dawson and his son. Teacher Tang fought to run out of oil alone, and was gloriously captured.

The whole story cannot but be said to be full of ups and downs. There are young people who have been tortured by wars, there are desperate saviors, and there are great heroes who fight alone. Together, they are moving everywhere.
However, it must be taken into account that this movie is about the Dunkirk retreat. There is no need to portray anything, just three sentences are very touching.
1. 400,000 soldiers were to retreat within a week, and 1,200 cannons and 20,000 machine guns were dropped behind them.
2. More than 800 civilian ships flew back and forth to rescue people in airstrikes, and a total of more than 200 small boats were sunk.
3. The British Air Force lost the lives of 106 fighter jets and 60 pilots.

This movie is not about the battle of Dunkirk.
It's Dunkirk's Great Retreat!
400,000 people evacuated to the beach within 20 days of the war, waiting to board the ship in a depth of only 50 kilometers.
This kind of thing cannot be imagined in history books. 400,000 people dropped dozens of tons of baggage, and more than 60,000 vehicles including tanks lost their helmets and armors, like a frightened bird.
Then it was successfully evacuated within a week.
Behind it is the enemy who likes to go all out, and the whole country celebrates. And the tens of thousands of comrades in the back of the palace were sent to the concentration camp.
In front of me was the whole world with a look of astonishment. For the French, there are also building materials for them to build temporary shelters for themselves.
Even when I got home, I couldn't be happy. No one knows how to explain this failure to the people and the world.
After that, the basic national policy of our empire suddenly became "Never surrender". It was a hell, there was not even a process of transformation.
This story, even if it were read straightforwardly, was thrilling.

Based on this original material, is this movie excellent?
There are a lot of people going abroad, but it feels like the actions of one division, not like three army groups.
The real heroes are the people who guard the street at the beginning of the movie. What happened to them in the end?
Just killed the boy George?
Blind me, Teacher Tang, is that what Mr. Tang uses?
I look forward to Teacher Tang using this book as a bid for the Olympics, and getting the best actor will start.
Although Nolan is not good at thinking, but with such a profound subject, he can think of a lifelong subject with just a single detail, it is really not easy to be able to photograph such an ideological.
"Although Russia is big, behind us is Moscow."
"Even though Europe is big, there is a strait behind us"-it is not easy to get around this emotion. It proves once again that this is the path of disaster films. Only when facing a volcanic earthquake, people's thoughts are so simple and they only seek a way to survive.
Moreover, there is a big problem here... People in the play don't have to risk their deaths and get on the ship. They can choose to surrender or become a puppet army.
Especially for the French army at that time, following the puppet government to surrender was the choice of most people, and only a few went to Britain. Although there are not many British defections, some people do so and joined SS. At that time, the outside world did not know that the camp was so frantic. If they were really afraid of death, surrender was a reasonable choice.
The Frenchman, watching the corpses of a boat washed ashore, why did he get on the boat? Normal people take off their uniforms and go home! The German army ordered from the highest level to stop the offensive, but the British and French soldiers did not know. Facing the enemy's terrifying land and air superiority, is it too long to put on the British military uniform at this time? Is he Jewish? Don't have family? Hate Germans? Not convinced? Is it because you heard that there are many job opportunities in the UK?
This is the story we want to know. Otherwise, they hope to get on the boat over and over again, but they have their brains!
This drama is considered to be a good-looking movie at the upper middle level, but it is really far from our expectations.
But this year is a small year in Hollywood, so far there is no more eye-catching movie, this work may become the top five of the year.

Boredom is really boring, the main theme is the melody of God; but this awesome structure is enough for Nolan and his fans to blow for ten years, and enough for film school to study for ten years. I'm still making a fuss about time division, but I really have to accept that I can still play new tricks. Nolan's understanding of time is enough to firmly dominate the position of a contemporary master.

The three story lines have different time lengths, but they are edited in parallel deliberately, creating an illusion. This time, there are not many narrative tricks or visual spectacles. The main thing is to restore the atmosphere of horror and create a sense of despair and tension at the time. There are heroes and ordinary minions who are frightened. The minions have a stronger sense of substitution. Music has a strong boost to the mood of the film, and it also makes the ending more relieved. The end gliding is really beautiful. Count Nolan as a new challenge.

Rear Admiral: We need our army back.
