There is no victory at all, holding on means everything

When watching "The Hunter in the Wilderness", I was full of poems by Rilke.
"The hard life never ends, but therefore, there is no end to growth."

Yes, it is best in winter, when the land is white, when the fog is thick and icy, in the silent and bare forest, With a bang, hit your prey. What a primitive human instinct-hunting, hunting and being killed.
It is also best to be a group of people, there are things you like and those you hate. Everyone is unshaven and shabby. Everyone is vulgar and behaves rudely. Yes, there is no disguise and no sympathy for each other. You are equal and equal and upright and unequal. The inequality is taken for granted.
It is best to be a strange place, symbolizing break-in and freedom, possible killing and temporary peace. Silence, that silence is vast and desolate, the night's fire is particularly shining, lonely, that loneliness is lingering. Even bloody, that bloody is the scenery you are traversing.

Everything is fine, and accidents can happen at any time.

When I watched the whole movie, my mood was particularly complicated. On the one hand, photography is really beautiful and picturesque. On the one hand, the reality is really terrible, and Xiao Lizi's body is completely abused. Loved his wife and was killed by his own white people; loved his son and was killed in front of him by a disliked person; finally met a savior and was hanged by the French; finally trusted him The captain also died. Without eating, drinking, wearing, freezing, being hungry and drifting away, it wouldn't be an exaggeration if the protagonist didn't hang up thousands of times. However, there was still a breath, and he survived.
The line said, "As long as the breath lasts, the battle will not stop." It is probably the limit of a person's spiritual power.
Most people couldn't do it, most of them became martyrs, and a few became heroes.
This requires a lot of courage, but also a lot of luck. But why didn't those luck let him avoid the previous tragedies, but luck was not bad when he died later? When the bear was slapped and stepped on by the bear's paw fan, it did not die. When it fell off the cliff, it happened to encounter a tree branch and did not die. When it died, the wound festered and the fever was high, it encountered the Pawnee tribe but it did not die. Yes, this is arranged by the screenwriter. This is what we usually call "destiny".

Fate is not idealistic, materialistic, or causal.

When I was young, I often troubled why there are bad people in the world.
Now there are more troubles, why life always forces people to choose a different path.

The movie is not complicated at all. You don’t need to think too much. You can see the primitive Boni people and the primitive Sioux people, the Americans who risk their lives for profit, and the modern cruel French; you can see all the grace. Qiu Yiqi. All expressions are presented naked, and even the phantom sound of the inner world echoes in your ears. In the end, Xiao Li had no enemies, the Sioux killed him, and the blood spilled out in the river little by little. But I didn't feel happy in my heart. What's the point? This victory came too late and too hard. It was just the result of reluctantly holding on to it.

Many times, what you want comes too late, and you lose that joy when you get it.
Chasing survival, chasing money, chasing fame, chasing ideals, chasing happiness. As long as the breath lasts, life drives this endless desire to move you forward, make you painful, and make you lose and gain.

There is no victory in life, holding on means everything. This is the only way.

Maybe the movie and Rilke want to tell us the same:

"May you have enough patience to bear it, and a pure heart to believe."
Such a life may be less regrettable.

  • John Fitzgerald: We had a deal, Glass! I tried to tell your boy! Alright? I tried to tell him what was happening, but wouldn't listen and he kept on screamin'. And he was gonna get everybody killed! But you and me, we had a deal. Y'all know what happened out there. On my soul, the Lord, HE knows what happened out there.

Hugh Glass: There was no deal. You killed my boy.

John Fitzgerald: Or may be you shoulda raised a man... instead of some girly little bitch.

  • John Fitzgerald: You came all this way just for your revenge, huh? Did you enjoy it, Glass?... 'Cause there ain't nothin' gon' bring your boy back.
