Authorized rich black fairy tale

The works that won the Cannes Best Director Award in recent years are always full of strong personal characteristics of the author, and the style often overshadows the content of the film. This "Sunset Car God" is no exception. The old-fashioned plot, speed stunts, gangster infighting, and the design of the bridge section of confidantes and troubles made me retell it unintentionally. However, I think this is indeed the best work of Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn so far.

This is not the European version of Quentin or Wu Yusen, although it is full of intricate gang relationships and sudden depictions of violence. An unspeakable poetry gradually exudes in the carefully designed picture, and it feels like watching a black fairy tale. The portrayal of fringe characters like speed stuntman is very unique, thanks in large part to Ryan Gosling's superb interpretation, which reveals the mentality of a taciturn character.

The label-style slow motion is exactly the same as the previous work "Bronson", but it is used more skillfully and restrained here. The first meeting of the hero and the heroine and the kissing/killing in the elevator at the end made me taste like Wong Kar-wai. Romance comes. In addition, the director is also very thoughtful about using reflective objects to expand the inherent picture space, such as the mirror in the heroine's home, the rear mirror when the hero is driving the car, and so on. The most successful is the extremely realistic reproduction of the California style of the 80s. Whether it is the scorpion jacket of the leading actor or the nostalgic soundtrack, it easily hits my sensory cells.

Drive quotes

  • [first lines]

Driver: [on phone] There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?

    [pause]

Driver: Good. And you won't be able to reach me on this phone again.

  • Shannon: [to Driver] A lot of guys mess around with married women, but you're the only one I know who robs a joint just to pay back the husband. Crazy.
