For some movies, there are always some inexplicable things pulling me. I wanted to find a relaxing movie tonight, but I found another movie to watch 1/3 and couldn't stand it anymore. I still wanted to watch "Prisoner" in my heart. I searched the disk decisively, and stared at the screen for two and a half hours without turning my eyes. When the ending subtitles jumped out of the screen, I suddenly recovered, followed by a chill from behind, and ran quickly. I turned on the light in the room...
As a suspense and thriller, "Prisoner" is not the most visually impactful, but it relies on the layers of the story to firmly grasp the viewer's nerves and lead the viewer to follow it The guide went to guess the ending unconsciously, and several clues were rolled out one after another, but the result was unexpected. After watching the whole film, we can reverse the various hints and foreshadowings before, so that the several stories narrated can be completely connected. The structure of the film is very delicate and skillful. The director has done a very clean handling of the picture, just like the weather in the film. Even if the rain is constant and there is no sunshine from beginning to end, it feels like a thorough wait-and-see. The plot is not complicated, it's just the process of finding the children for the two fathers who lost their children. But this process led to the interrelation of several events in several families. The police's reasoning about the murderer and Anna's father's reasoning about the murderer as the bereaved party serve as two clues in the whole film. They are simultaneously advanced, and two-way reasoning is carried out based on the different starting points and observation angles of the two people. The implied intersections of each person are not really intertwined. It was not until the last two people's thoughts were buckled together that the film stopped abruptly, leaving the viewer with an open ending. Quite exciting.
The narrative rhythm of the first half of the film is a bit slow, but as the plot unfolds, the multi-clue narration captures the viewer's thoughts at once. The last 1/3 of the film is the most exciting. The multi-clue narration leads to the ending one by one. It is clear and not chaotic. There is no surprise of throwing an Easter egg, but it gives the viewer a lot of room for thinking. It is precisely because of this open ending that after watching the movie, after recollecting the whole story, can we appreciate its horror and express its emotional and human side.
The emotions and performances of the actors in the whole movie are well controlled, freely retractable, and each character has a clear personal style. At the same time, it also forms the contrast of the characters in the story, which promotes the advancement of the plot. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal are both wonderful and show their best.
The content to be conveyed by the story itself is not only limited to the good and evil of human nature, but also a reflection on faith and one's own endurance. When a matter has broken the bottom line of the party’s psychological tolerance, choosing the human side to face it is the most worthy of discussion. Regarding the advocacy and worship of faith, whether it can be effective at the most critical moments obviously depends on the instinct of human nature.

Prisoners quotes

  • Keller Dover: Don't talk to them.

Ralph Dover: [Looks up at Keller, confused and distraught] Eliza told me they're dead... Is it true?

    Keller Dover: No.

Ralph Dover: Well, she said... they found... their bloody clothes...

Keller Dover: Don't you tell your mother that. Don't you *dare* tell your mother that. Do you understand me? Now, I need you to listen to me...

    [whispering harshly]

Keller Dover: I need you to stay and run the house for a couple of days; and you make sure she does not watch the news and when the paper comes, you just throw it the fuck away! Listen to me... We do *not* give up on your sister. We do *not*!

    [pauses, while trembling]

Keller Dover: I'm gonna find her... I'm gonna bring her home. We do not give up.

Ralph Dover: You're gonna bring her *home*? She's *dead*, *you* can't do anything, you've been leaving me and mom here while you've been going out and getting *fucking drunk*! You think I can't smell it on you?

Keller Dover: [Keller grabs Ralph's shoulders, whips him around, and pins him against the wall in a fury] *SHUT UP*!

  • Keller Dover: He's not a person anymore.
