After reading the original book for the first time, 13 dwarves, except for Thorin, have the most vivid impression of Fat Pangbo. The section on the dark forest has the most ink on him. In order to avoid spoilers, I will not go into details. The other 11 people always find their faces blurred, they are nothing more than bright hoods of different colors, and they have very few lines.
The adaptation and reshaping of PJ seems to me to be a real success. It’s difficult to make the images of 13 dwarves full and touching. Moreover, this is only one-third of the scene. The plot has not yet begun, but I think many people have seen that more than half of the dwarves have their own uniqueness. Dress, act, language style. The most popular movie version of the visual inspection is the brothers Thorin and Kilifili. This can be expected from the various studio photos that broke out in the previous publicity.
Apart from these three, what moved me the most was a lively Bahrain. The name was first known to us as the inscription on the tombstone of the Moriah Mine in "League of the Rings". The cousin of the dwarf Jinli died at the hands of a half-orc.
In "The Hobbit", he does not wear luxurious fur like the royal Solin Chili Fili, nor is he the shabby short suit of blacksmiths, toysmiths, and tinkers. Even when living among the people, Bahrain still wears a gorgeous dark red robe with white beard and hair. The weapon used is a sword instead of a battle axe, hammer or slingshot, which is obviously the configuration of a noble warrior. Several close-up shots of fights can also see his time-tested battlefield and veteran steadfastness, and his sword style has the shadow of Gandalf in the Battle of White City.
Looking back at the history of the dwarf clan from the opening, it can be seen that Fangding’s son, Bahrain, is the important minister of the dwarf royal family and may look more like a civil servant. However, from elves to dwarves, Middle-earth is mostly civil and military.
During the journey of rejuvenation, Thorin was by his side. He was probably not only an arm of assistance to the government, but also a father and brother of emotional sustenance.
When Smaug came to Elbur, Bahrain had been watching Thorin on the wall, and was one of the first to notice the strangeness. It was also Thorin's swift reaction that prevented him from being burned to ashes by the dragon.
At Bilbo's house, Bahrain also participated in the game of clearing the dishes. Did the dwarves practice juggling since they were young?
The contract between Thorin and Bilbo is witnessed by Bahrain. Have you noticed the cute expression of Bahrain when he got the contract signed by Bilbo on the road, took out his glasses, watched carefully, and then squeezed his eyes at Bilbo and smiled?
It was Bahrain who had a long conversation with Thorin all night. He asked Thorin if he could be at ease in the exile of the dwarves. The veteran soldier is tired of watching the war, and I am afraid he is also cold. Even if they take home the garden, how can the mountain of treasure be worth the sacrifice of more people. But when Thorin showed his attitude, he did not hesitate to approve it and expressed his willingness to fully support it.
By the campfire in the camp, Kilifeili talked about the half-orcs as a joke, but Thorin reprimanded them, and the two looked at each other with shame. This is not to blame them. Indeed, the two brothers had never experienced the Battle of Moriah, so they did not have such intuitive and perceptual memories of the hatred between the two races. Bahrain is not like Thorin, who gives sharp and direct criticism to the younger generation. He uses emotional stories to narrate the blood and tears of the nation's history for Kilifili and the audience indifferently. So you can see that PJ gave Bahrain a very important task in laying out the background of the whole story.
In the first battle of Moriah, Thor died, and the head was thrown at the feet of his grandson by the pale orc Azog, and Thorne disappeared. The young dwarf prince stepped forward to fight Azog to the death, and the dwarf army was inspired by this to fight back and win the final victory. Thorin also received the title of "Oak Shield". At that time, Bahrain, whose hair and beard were still gray, had tears in his eyes on the battlefield full of corpses, believing that Thorin would be the leader of his life to follow...
The appearance of this character made the whole story more melancholy and heavy. Thorin is the ideal and grand ambition for national restoration, while Bahrain is the witness of history and the vicissitudes of time.
Now, I will not compare the movie version with the original. This is a brand-new story and a group of brand-new characters. I look forward to the release of the second and third parts, which will fulfill my love and expectation of this group of characters.
