the director Pierre Morel Interview
Q: When you started shooting, "Hurricane," the film, directed scenes from your point of view, what do you think is the most important part?
Answer: In "Hurricane Rescue", there are more action effects that directly achieve the most effective purpose, which is related to the work done behind the background of the protagonist of the film. So what the audience saw was Bryan's dexterity and ease of removing all obstacles.
Question: What can be called an action scene?
A: We arranged a lot of rehearsals for Liam Neeson, because I want him to complete the film's actions as much as possible. Of course, we will not let him jump off the bridge or crash, but he has a lot of fighting shots, so it takes a lot of time to practice. This is very strict and demanding for him. Because I don't want the movement to be reflected in the picture too fast. In fact, Liam has really become tough in learning and fighting.
Question: We noticed his inner struggle at the terrible torture scene. How did you manage this scene?
Answer: In fact, the scene is really very nervous and scary. In the film, Brian began to think after discovering that his daughter's good friend had been killed by an overdose. He understood the darkest side of the matter, and his father's instinct removed any worries and depression. Therefore, I think that scene made him lose his mind.
Question: In terms of your experience, has Liam Neeson become the focus of attention because of his work?
Answer: Liam has become the focus of attention completely. We once closed the scene for him, and he didn't like to be disturbed by some "fanatic" behaviors at work. This will make it difficult for him to enter the role. We can't imagine other people playing this role. Liam's personality and own conditions are very suitable for this role-1.95 meters in height, but also very sensitive. When you see him, you would never think of him as a militant, but you can feel a certain potential under his cold outer surface.
Q: Does Maggie Grace's acting experience in TV series make her more and more dazzling?
Answer: Maggie is very professional. She takes her work seriously, and can quickly integrate herself into her work, and perform outstanding performances in the first place. She knows how to act, how to face different things and express what kind of emotions. She is already an experienced acting veteran.
Question: When you want to shoot, how does your experience as a director of photography express the action?
Answer: This question you should ask Michel Abramworth, who is the director of photography for this movie . In fact, it is obvious that there will be some collisions between our methods, because I have never completely given up on this job. When I was directing the film, I still controlled the camera by hand. But if I am a director and a photographer at the same time, it will become a little difficult to deal with. Judging from the photography experience accumulated by Michelle, I have full confidence in his abilities, and we have had a long discussion about the look I showed when shooting.
Question: What are the characteristics of the city you want to express?
Answer: I don't want to program the characteristic version of Paris, a capital of "cosmetics". I want to express the true side of Paris.
Q: This is not easy for all night shooting scenes, right?
Answer: We shoot many night scenes with a digital camera, which will be more sensitive. For example, when using 35mm film to shoot the buildings that flashed by when chasing, because the digital camera is not good enough to make the picture rough, it is impossible to show some of the jittery shots at that time.
Q: Do you think it was Michael Mann's movie "Killing with a Borrowed Knife" that opened up a way to express the camera digitally at night?
Answer: Yes.
Q: In "Hurricane Rescue", Paris under your lens has familiar locations and many buildings seen in life. Are you looking for something when you are shooting these?
Answer: I used a Paris landscape postcard perspective, instead of using standard buildings such as the Eiffel Tower that people often see as the background. So I searched for a lot of characteristic Paris places to show the truth of Paris in the eyes of those tourists. On the day of the French presidential election, half of the streets in Paris were blocked. We decided to film the scenes of the police controlling the order when the new president drove through the streets.
Question: How do you handle the action design in action movies, for example, some catch-up shots remind us of certain clips of "The Bourne"?
Answer: Of course, everyone remembers the scene of crossing the one-way street. Due to the inconvenience caused by traffic and don't damage anything when shooting shooting scenes, the night shooting task becomes complicated. In fact, we destroyed a lot of things, but these were not shown by the camera. In a sense, the male protagonist in the film did not give up on the hunt, even if he finally rushed to the ship, these necessary destructions are not important anymore. These are all our calculations of his speed and ability.
Question: What do you think is the most difficult scene in the last scene of the film on the boat?
Answer: There must be a lot of exciting things in the final fighting scene of the movie. For field work, we need to show the details of dangerous actions, such as the sound of a knife crossing the face. Even if the blade is not completely sharp, it requires multiple rehearsals in a narrow space on site.
Question: Have you ever used a movie storyboard?
Answer: For me, storyboard is just a tool, based on discussions in other departments. On the one hand, you have to adapt and present it. Moreover, the storyboard is not complicated in the post-production of the film, and all the outbreaks are vividly expressed.
