Bloody gladiatorial battles, broken republican dreams

Yesterday was Ridley Scott’s 75th birthday, so I decided to watch a movie of him. I probably chose "Gladiator" after browsing, because I happened to be watching Mumford's "History of Urban Development", and I just finished watching the part of Ancient Rome. So I want to strike while the iron is hot and get a glimpse of Rome's majesty.

The beginning is a plot of Roman army crusade against the Germans. As the book says, the history of Rome is full of killings. The iron hoof of Rome opened up frontiers everywhere, conquered the whole of Europe, and its continuous expansion supported the materialistic life of Rome. All the best things in the land are transported along the avenue to the bright city of Rome. As the saying goes, all roads lead to Rome.

The Romans' love for killing is also reflected in the fighting activities, which are the main scenes in the film. The spectators in the arena hope to see the mutual slaughter between gladiators, the surging blood and broken limbs can ignite their desires time and time again. "They are spectators. You are not slaughtering but performing. Please please!" It seems that ancient Rome has raised the aesthetics of violence to an unattainable height. Whenever you win after the bloodbath, those people will burst into cheers like a tide. This is almost the same as the performance of the audience after scoring a goal on the football field. The protagonist, Mark Simmons, was surrounded by cheers after a battle. He shouted, "Aren't you satisfied?"

Is the pleasure of watching the battle magnified by the arena numbs the Roman citizens and makes them feel about the conquest and killing Indifferent? The old king who appeared at the beginning of the film was Marco Aurelius, a famous philosopher king in history, and he was considered an omniscient wise man. The author of "Meditation Records", the last of the five sage emperors of ancient Rome. In the film, the philosopher King Marco Aurelius confessed in front of the protagonist Maximus before his death, admitting that the war is meaningless. "For the honor of Rome" actually has no real meaning, it's just an empty concept.

The king's confession may be the scriptwriter's own passionate arrangement of the plot, but this shows that people nowadays cruelly do not understand the ancients. Wasn't ancient Rome one of the most advanced civilizations in the world at that time? Doesn’t it pretend to be equal to the legal system? Why is there such a blood-stained history? Is it because the concept of equality in life had not yet appeared at that time, and the essence of humanistic care was still in its infancy?

"Gladiator" is a well-made epic movie with grand scenes. It won many Oscar awards that year. But I don’t know if it’s my taste. I can tolerate the long foreshadowing in front, but I think it’s terrible at the end. The dog’s blood lies in the 180-degree reversal of the situation in which the traitor is in the lead. "Kang Demao died in a foolish and sad manner. The

most hypocritical thing is the end of the republican dream! So this is the main theme of the United States. The death of Marco Aurelius ended the dynasty of the Five Sages, but the management of the Five Sages brought Rome to its strongest period. Under such a historical background, everyone should still be immersed in the great dream of the empire. How could it be upset that the empire longed for a republic? And the republic of Rome has long gone after Augustus! The setting of

heroes revenge and hate to kill the evil Boss and sacrifice heroically is understandable. But for a glorious ending. The blunt history is mixed together, which is really hard for me to accept.

Although the ending is handled poorly , the overall plot arrangement as a historical drama is still very clever, and many historical events in the film do exist. But the joke is ten million. Don’t take it seriously. After watching this kind of movie, it’s best to look up the real historical facts. This is also a good opportunity to learn history, and there are many interesting knowledge points in this history. For

example, the five sage emperors of Rome: The power alternation method is very safe. Among the Roman emperors, these five are famous for their peaceful transmission of thrones. Each emperor chooses his successor, and then adopts him as a righteous son, thinking of the crown prince, thus avoiding political turmoil before and after the change of power. Therefore, the throne alternates steadily, and there is no turbulence. The five people succeeded one after another, making the political lucid for more than 80 years, which is in great contrast with the blood and blood of the previous 100 years. These five emperors were humble and cared for their subjects. This period was also the strongest period of the Roman Empire since Augustus (Gaius Julius Octavian). This period is called Roman governance, also known as the Five Sage Emperor Period or the Five Sage Emperor Period. " Http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BA%94%E8%B4%A4%E5%B8%9D

British historian Edward Gibbon, in his famous book "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," Commodore is positioned as the first person to cause the decline and fall of the country. http:t.cn/zjcULRHLike the one in "Gladiator", he is so obsessed with fighting activities that he even ends up on his own! (Fu-e) Because Kang Maode was so unbearable, he was so angry that the Roman Senate imposes an obliteration punishment on him-the curse of memory! http:t.cn/zjc2Zyo

The "History of Urban Development" I was reading is a good book, it seems to be Western civilization. When you read related books, watching a movie will give you a special feeling. Not only do you know the general context of history, but you will also discover many historical details. For example, in ancient times, purple is the color of emperors; there are many majestic statues in the city of Rome; you will have heard of the cruel battle of Carthage and know that Carthage is now in Tunisia.

A sound knowledge structure can make the world look more interesting.

A majestic heroic epic. What if you can exchange for freedom and lose eternal life? After death, we will meet again. Four stars for the film, plus one for the magnificent Roman architecture and photography composition in the film.

In a vain attempt to activate the grand event of the Colosseum to dominate the hearts of the people, but unexpectedly provided a vengeful general with a stage like a battlefield to help him regain his prestige. This is what the new Caesar who murdered his father and sister conspired to usurp the throne did not expect. As a result, what was even more surprising was that the Roman people’s wisdom and passion for admiring heroes far exceeded the blind obedience of the public. There were two "thumb judgments of life and death". Reflects Scott's consistent attitude: the people are not stupid, the ugly ones are politicians! …For the extended version, the director made a special statement, "If you press the play button, the extended version of the Gladiator will be played. It is not the director’s cut version. The director’s cut version is the length of the movie broadcast. It is included here. It’s worth seeing many of the bridges that were removed during the editing process."

Gladiator quotes

  • Maximus: Five thousand of my men are out there in the freezing mud. Three thousand of them are bloodied and cleaved. Two thousand will never leave this place. I will not believe they fought and died for nothing.

  • Maximus: Ancestors, I ask you for your guidance. Blessed mother, come to me with the Gods' desire for my future. Blessed father, watch over my wife and son with a ready sword. Whisper to them that I live only to hold them again, for all else is dust and air. Ancestors, I honor you and will try to live with the dignity that you have taught me.
