To work hard, to be brave and to be loyal to the country, etc., is the Spartan spirit we know well. It originated from the Lvkugu reform in the seventh century BC. The reform included the famous "zero-year-old" plan①, "Qualified people "Training ②, heavy armored infantry tactics, brand-new "citizen" concept ③ and so on. These reforms completely changed the political system, psychological structure, and spiritual outlook of Sparta. The city-state became a military camp, and the entire Spartan society became a huge phalanx that existed for war.
All these allowed the Spartans to lead the Greeks to successfully defend against foreign enemies. The Battle of Wenquan Pass in 480 BC pushed the results of Lu Kugu’s reform to the extreme, and the spirit of Sparta has since become the myth of Sparta.
The Battle of Hot Spring Pass is also the story told in the movie "300 Spartans". In 480 BC, 300,000 Persian troops composed of nomadic tribes marched westward along land and sea routes, through the vast Persian Empire, and came to Greece to ask the Greeks for "earth" and "water."
The Greeks were busy celebrating festivals and holding sports meets, and were too lazy to take care of this army of different ethnic groups, dozens of times more than their own (maybe because of fear). A total of nearly 7,000 coalition forces were put together, led by 300 Spartan warriors led by Leonidas, to block the enemy at the hot spring gate known as the "Scorching Gate".
At the gate where only two carriages could pass, the Greeks successfully blocked a large number of Persian troops. The Persian King Xerxes went around behind the soldiers at Wenquan Pass and was also strongly resisted. In desperation, on the third night, It sent its own personal guard, the "Undead Army". Many historians disagree that the Battle of Wenquan Pass was defeated on the "Anopea"-that special passage, but believed that it was defeated by the bow and arrow that the Spartans despised as the "things for women." superior.
When a Persian said that our arrows can cover the sun, Dienekis (one of the 300 warriors) replied:
That's better, so that we can fight in the shade!
The Spartans advocate close combat (which is reflected in a lot of movies), and regard the bow and arrow as a long-range killing weapon as a manifestation of weakness. However, soon after, they were defeated by this dismissive flying arrow and fought to the last person.
The Battle of Hot Spring Pass was very important to Greece. It proved that the Persians were not invincible. The spirit of Sparta inspired the whole of Greece. They no longer hesitated and feared. Under the leadership of the Spartan commander, the Greek army blocked the Persian army and eventually won the Bosnian War.
① The Spartans’ eugenics program is to abandon the frail newborn.
② All citizens must participate in the education and training system unique to the Spartans, including theft, military training, loyalty training, hunting, dancing and other social skills training.
③ Different from the traditional concept of "citizen" in ancient Greece, the concept here is that individuals unconditionally dedicate themselves to the group to which they belong, first the country, then family or friends, and finally themselves.
