Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) I

watched this movie two years ago, and watched it again for the IMDB250 series. I found that the English name of the film was so long after rewatching it, which was beyond my expectation.

The film tells about the causes of various mistakes and the destruction of the world caused by mistakes. A commander of a U.S. Air Force base issued a nuclear attack order against the Soviet Union because of fear of the Communist Party. When the US government and military discovered this situation, they immediately organized a meeting to discuss countermeasures. At the meeting, everyone discovered that the aircraft that executed the order could no longer be recalled. This error was caused by a series of conflicting orders. A general suggested that since the attack has already been launched, it is better to attack first and eliminate the main target of the Soviet Union. The President of the United States disagreed with this plan, so he asked the Soviet ambassador to discuss countermeasures. At the same time, fierce fighting is taking place inside and outside the air base, and the president’s army is attacking the air base for the purpose of talking to the commander. The commander who issued the order shot himself because he was afraid of being caught and leaking the return instruction. However, a British officer in the same base guessed the code based on the commander's last words. After the return command was issued, except for the aircraft shot down by the Soviet Union, only one did not return because it did not receive a signal after being hit. At this time, the officer on the plane was working hard to repair the plane, and the nuclear bomb was launched after the repair. The Soviet "doomsday machine" was activated at the same time, and the surface of the earth was destroyed. The Soviet "doomsday machine" was made after imitating the American Dr. Strange Ai, and this Dr. Strange Ai was a Nazi, and he was very happy to see such a situation. Finally, under the advice of Dr. Qi Ai, people moved to live underground one after another.

This film is a black humor that satirizes the Cold War, and it is full of spoofs, as can be seen from the other name of the film "How I Learned to Stop Fear and Fall in Love with Bombs". It vilified every aspect, every link, and two countries of the Cold War period one by one, much like some nonsense comedy. The first irony of the film is the commander of the US Air Force base who issued the order. His reason is simple-he was afraid of affecting his body fluids, and he felt that the reason for the threat of body fluids was exhaustion after ejaculation! It's too much. Such a big person has never taken a physical hygiene class? The film secondly satirizes the loopholes and contradictions in the control system between the US government and the military. I won’t talk about the specifics in this regard, because I didn’t understand what was violated, and then what happened. The third irony of the film can also be said to be the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union. The President of the United States is like an office worker sitting in the Pentagon and talking on the phone with the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union. During the call, the President of the United States is cautious and cautious, for fear of angering the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union. This episode is completely demonizing the President of the United States, and it is very interesting and funny. It also reflects the position of the United States in the Cold War in the 1960s. The Soviet prime minister was portrayed as a grumpy and domineering dictator according to the image in the minds of Europeans and Americans, which fits the thinking of Europeans and Americans very well. The fourth irony of the film is the Nazis in the US government. The typical Nazi characteristics of Dr. Qi Ai can be seen by most people, but the US government can tolerate the presence of such talents, and it also allows him to create an "apocalyptic machine". This is the biggest irony to the US government. If it weren't for the existence of Dr. Qi Ai, there would be no machine that would destroy the world. The fifth film vilified the absurd behavior in the American war room. The actions of the Soviet ambassador and the American generals in the combat room are exactly the same as those on the street, always attacking each other, but the people in the combat room are indifferent to this. Through these, it can be seen that the people in the combat room are not nervous about the threat of war, which shows the indifference of the top Americans. In short, the 95-minute film contains all aspects of the Cold War.

In addition, the film also portrays two very patriotic officers and a group of ordinary soldiers, who represent an aspect of the U.S. government and military. One is a warlike general with a wife and a mistress. He is hostile to the Soviet Union and easily excited, but he is very patriotic. He is a typical representative of the high-level American military. The other officer is a representative of the middle and lower levels. He loves the country and is willing to serve the country, but he is also afraid of death. He is a representative of ordinary officers. In addition to military officers, the film also portrays the soldiers on the plane to show them at the bottom-loyal, patriotic, and brave. These three aspects of shaping are very positive and very rare in this movie with spoof, satire, and ugly.

The main purpose of the film satirizes the various political, military, and social realities that existed during the Cold War, such as the construction of the "doomsday machine", various arms races, space races, and people's various belligerent and fearful attitudes. Through these, people who watch the movie feel the fear under the threat of nuclear, reflect on their behavior, and avoid scenes in the movie. In short, the film conveys a kind of anti-war thinking-stop nuclear containment, stop the construction of various nuclear weapons, in order to avoid the destruction of the earth! Because of this, the various factors that trigger the war described in the movie are not important, but are nothing but the loopholes and coincidences of various systems in the general environment, so there is no need to go into it. However, Dr. Qi Ai mentioned the "nuclear containment" viewpoint, and this "nuclear containment" is the root cause of the nuclear arms race and the nuclear war in the film. The irony is that "nuclear containment" still exists today, and today, twenty years after the end of the Cold War, nuclear war will break out at once! Stanley Kubrick's thinking is not generally forward-looking.

The focus of the movie is on the plot, so other aspects of the movie are quite satisfactory, so I won’t say much about it. However, the picture of the bomber flying is very real, and it cannot be seen that it was made by fake scenes. Is it real shooting? That would require a lot of investment. It seems that Stanley Kubrick is still very willing to invest in filming.

The actors in this film are mainly male actors. Peter Sellers plays the role of the triangle, Dr. Qi Ai, the President of the United States and a British officer at the air base. I recognized the first two, but the last one was actually played by Peter Sellers. For him, there is no need to say anything, the acting is perfect. I've seen a lot of George C. Scott's movies, and he is also an acting school, acting like what he does. Others have very little information, so I won't say more.

In short, a ridiculous satirical black humor film. The movie is pretty good, but watching it now when the Cold War is over, I don't feel that kind of feeling anymore.
