few Years ago, I saw some Americans discussing the ten strangest American movies in history on the Internet. Almost all of them had "Being John Malkovich" (Being John Malkovich, 1999) in their nominations. Later, I was fortunate enough to see this movie, and was deeply impressed by the fantastic ideas in the movie. It made me remember the name of the screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Charlie Kaufman). The name of the movie comes from line 209 of the English poet Pope’s poem "Elois to Abelard", the context is this:

These four poems are directly quoted in the movie. But after thinking about it carefully, I found that their meaning is not obvious. First of all, there is no character in the movie whose soul can be called "spotless"; secondly, where is the eternal sunshine, it is also invisible. If "the eternal sunshine of the beautiful soul" refers to a good wish to escape the troubles of the world, then why should Joel insist on keeping the memory of Clay? Anyway, "forget about the world, and be forgotten by the world" is "how happy"!
I feel that to clarify this question, I must understand the original poem. So I found out the whole poem of Pope's "Elois to Abelard" and read it again. The poem by

Pope is based on real people and things. Eloise and Abelard do exist in history.
Pierre Abelard (Pierre Abelard) was born in 1079 and was an important French philosopher of that era. His philosophical contribution is mainly the first application of logic to theological theory, which can be regarded as a pioneer of the Renaissance.
In 1118, he fell in love with his student Heloise during his tenure as the head of the Catholic school of Notre-Dame de Paris. He was nearly 40 years old at the time, while Eloise was only 18. Eloise's uncle is the Archbishop of Notre Dame (Canon), and she lives in his uncle's house. For the convenience of meeting, Abelard also boarded there.

This kind of text comes from a medieval scholar who is over half a century old, which is really unexpected. To this day, I can still feel strong passion when reading such words.
In 1132, Eloise saw a transcript of this letter. She couldn't help feeling ups and downs, picked up a pen and wrote a letter to Abrad. The letter expressed her current thoughts about Abelard and her love for them. She wrote:
My dear, as the whole world knows, you must know how important you are to me, knowing (if you no longer love me) this is the deepest betrayal and cruelest blow to me. I lost you as if I lost myself; you also know that there is nothing in the world that makes me sad more than losing you. The greater the grief, the more comfort is needed, as long as you can comfort me; you are the only cause of my grief, and only you have the power to comfort me. After receiving the letter, Abelard wrote a restrained reply. He said that the reason he didn't contact her was not because he was indifferent to her, but because he thought it would be good for both of them.
As a result, they shared a total of seven letters[④]. These letters describe not only personal relationships, but a series of extensive literary readings. Generally speaking, they are philosophical dialogues about love, marriage, and the spiritual world. Since they were copied out, interest in reading them has never disappeared for nearly 900 years.
Despite these frank and dissecting inner communications, nothing happened between Eloise and Abelard, and they both died in the monastery in the end. Abelard died in 1142 and Eloise died in 1164.

correspondence between Elois and Abelard was written in Latin and was officially published in 1616. It was translated into French in 1697, and from French into English in 1713. After Pope read the English translation, he was moved by Eloise's letter. So he imitated Eloise's tone and wrote an epistle poem "Eloise to Abelard" in the first person.
In the poem, Pope imagines Eloise as struggling between "dignity and nature, virtue and passion" between love for God and love for his beloved. Pope also inserted a description of the cold, crude environment in which Eloise lived, which enhanced the appeal of the poem. This poem contains a lot of Eloise's memories of past love, but it is not a narrative poem. Pope assumes that the reader is already quite familiar with the story. He only wanted to express his emotions through a female point of view, and the focus of his poems was Eloise's narration of the pain in his heart.
As a nun, Eloise is not allowed to have personal feelings, but her love for Abelard has not extinguished. Therefore, when she was immersed in the thirst for love, she could not get rid of the guilt. The whole poem ends here. My understanding of the last few sentences refers to Pope himself. Pope was 29 years old when he wrote this poem. He must have been passionate about the scene and wrote his own feelings in it. Pope's own life is also very unfortunate. He has been ill since he was a child, his spine has been deformed, and his body is disabled. His height is only 1.37 meters. Therefore, he can most appreciate this sad and hopeless love.
