The absurd world is lost in fate, and in the end no one can escape the fate. Various signs are suggesting to the protagonist that the results of all this are destined to be unchangeable.
A few details left a deep impression on me. When Cole escaped from the mental hospital in 1990, the guards only glanced at him and didn't say much. This vividly shows that there is no difference between inside and outside.
There is also a printed quilt inside the white quilt that Cole was put back into the future. I think this expresses the madness and absurdity of these scientists.
