Seems to understand but not to understand, in the mist

Right after watching it,
I was full of doubts in my mind. I felt that the movie basically said that Donnie would go through the time tunnel and go back in time for his girlfriend's immortality, so that he would be smashed to death, in order to change what has happened. But what killed him was the development of the previous story to the end, the engine of the plane Donnie's mother took, so I didn't understand it instantly, everything was connected end to end, as if there was no beginning.
Looking back at the beginning of the film, Donnie woke up on the road and smiled strangely. I felt that all this should be a loop, just like "triangle", which should have happened many times. In the previous round, his girlfriend died at the end, so he decided to go back to the past. At the beginning of the film, he woke up and smiled because he thought he could change history and save his girlfriend, but he didn’t expect him to do it. After so many things developed to the end his girlfriend died. He traveled through time and space again. This time he finally decided to let his death to ensure everyone’s safety. So he laughed again at the end of the film. This time the laugh should be because he thought he was Can save his girlfriend.
He used to keep looping because he never wanted to use his own death to ensure that everything is normal. He just kept going back to the past and wanted to make some changes to change the result, but in the end all failed, until he finally made it. Self-sacrifice, the film mentioned "overcoming fear" and "death loneliness" several times, so I feel that a big part of this film is that Donnie gradually overcomes the fear of loneliness of death, and finally accepts death calmly.
Later, I read a film review on Time.com. It made sense and answered most of the doubts. But the general feeling of this film to me is that I am confused and not very clear, but I feel that the director has bought a lot. Foreshadowing, set a lot of hints, very profound.

Donnie Darko quotes

  • [Pommeroy is reading to the class from the 1954 short story "The Destructors" by Graham Greene]

Karen Pommeroy: "There would be headlines in the papers. Even the grown-up gangs who ran the betting at the all-in wrestling and the Barrow Boys would hear with respect of how Old Misery's house had been destroyed. It was as though this plan had been with him all his life, pondered through the seasons, now in his 15th year crystallized with the pain of puberty." What is Graham Greene trying to communicate with this passage? Why did the children break into Old Misery's House? Joanie?

Joanie James: They wanted to rob him.

Karen Pommeroy: Joanie, if you had actually read the short story, which, at a whopping 13 pages, would have kept you up all night, you would know that the children find a great deal of money in the mattress, but they burn it.

  • Gretchen: Um, where do I sit?

Karen Pommeroy: Sit next to the boy you think is the cutest.

    [the class gasps]

Karen Pommeroy: Quiet! Let her choose.
