I have to say that "Old Nowhere" is the most desperate of all Coen Brothers films. As we all know, their film is known for its black humor, but this film has given up humor, leaving only a strong dark atmosphere.
The veteran Loweland Moss is a tough guy with a strong body, agile mind and superior willpower. But against the powerful gang, he couldn't take advantage of fighting alone, and his death seemed to be justified. Suger Anton, the perverted killer, is very scary. He never seems to be afraid of anything, or even death. However, he was not the last person to kill Loweland-besides him, there are undoubtedly many equally cruel and terrifying killers hidden in the gang. Even if the old sheriff finally brought Anton to justice, he could not defeat the criminal snobbery itself, and his failure was inevitable.
All the elderly in the film lost their power in the face of crime and became so depressed. The old police chief's father was shot by criminals and left his legs disabled. Uncle Max and his wife, who had a close relationship with the old sheriff's family, also died tragically at the guns of criminals, although that was a 1909 incident. There is nothing to cherish in the past, and there is no better time in American history. The disabled old father said helplessly, "What you see is nothing new. This country is very cruel to people."
After watching the film, many viewers will express emotion: Look, how dark American society is! Hehe, yes, but is the place outside the United States a pure land? At least in my opinion, the situation in other countries is not necessarily better than that in the United States, including the country in which we live. The residents of this country are equally indifferent to strangers, and criminals in this country are equally brutal when they kill people. In this world, there is no beautiful paradise that the elderly yearn for, "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MAN"!
At the end of the film, the old police chief told his wife helplessly about his dreams: "My father and I have been walking forward, and my father told me not to look back. The sky is getting dark, the moon is coming out, and the air is getting more and more. The colder it gets•••••• I always hope to be able to go farther and reach a place where it’s not so dark or so cold. And my father stood there waiting for me.” The
old sheriff dreamed of it. This road is actually the life of him and his father. Both of them, father and son, spent their entire lives to maintain justice and peace, but only when they were old did they discover that the world has not become better because of their efforts. On the contrary, the United States in 1980, compared with the United States in 1909, seemed to be darker and colder.
How desperate the life of the old sheriff and his father is! But think about ourselves, when we get old, can we reach that farther place? Our life may be nothing more than this!
