The final chapter of "The Lord of the Rings: Invincible Kings" is set for May 14th. So far, the trilogy of "Lord of the Rings", which has made many fans shout "Yes Qinghui", has been re-screened.
This classic series, which can be called "rewriting the history of film", was not only regarded as "the most unlikely film No. 1" , the third film also defeated "The Godfather" and topped the list of "Oscar Best Films" .
In the original work, the author Tolkien created an extremely magnificent fantasy "Middle-earth", and the depiction of perfectionism + detailed control makes people feel particularly real. Even JK Rowling said that he was "a joke" in front of Tuo Lao.
The movie just selected the most mainline part, which has shocked fans and has endless aftertastes for 20 consecutive years. It is conceivable how fascinating the story and connotation of the original book are.
Due to the limited production costs and film duration, the script of the trilogy has deleted a lot of the original content, which makes us occasionally have some doubts when watching movies: such as the existence of the big eagle, such as how strong the supreme ring is, etc.
As an "original fan", Xiaoge carefully sorted out some "background knowledge" and "unpopular gossip", so that everyone can appreciate this classic work more freely. (The content is friendly to Moexin!)
1. Why is the "Squad of the Ring of the Ring" 9 people?
In the film, everyone was infected by Frodo's courageous dedication and expressed their intention to join "The Fellowship of the Ring", but the number of people was not determined deliberately.
In the book, Elrond, the elf king, proposed that the number of people should correspond to the number of ring spirits:
"The number of the Fellowship Expedition should be nine. Nine walkers will fight against nine evil riders."
These nine people all played their unique roles in the long journey afterwards, and finally fulfilled their mission and cast hope into a miracle.
2. What kind of bondage do the elves and dwarves have?
The movie did not elaborate on the reason why the elf Legolas and the dwarf Jimli fell in love and killed each other.
According to the setting of "Middle-Earth History" in the original work, these two races have had a discord since their birth, and they have forged a feud in subsequent exchanges. However, the two sides also had a short "honeymoon period" and left "physical evidence"——
When the "Squad of the Rings" arrived at the Muria Ruins, they had to pass through a secret door. In the original book, the gate was built by elves and dwarves, and there are two races written on it. Legolas and Jimley were surprised at how close they were once and how close they were in their backyards!
It is written in the original book--
"It's not the dwarf's fault that the friendship fades." Jimley said.
"I never heard that it was the wizard's fault." Legolas said. "I've heard both," Gandalf said. "I won't say anything at this time. But I ask you two, Legolas and Jimli, to be friends at least to help me.
(Gandalf said, let me be quiet, it's too hard for me...)
Legolas and Jimley, the "real brothers in adversity", they ended up perfectly-the prince and the princess lived happily together (fog)-no, the prince and the dwarves went to the west by boat from Greyhaven together .
As for why Gandalf doesn’t know the answer, it’s because he walked out of the door last time, and he can just open the door from the inside and it’s done~
3. What song does "The King of Crossover" Aragon sing?
On the night Frodo was stabbed by the ring spirit, Aragorn, the descendant of the "Human King", sang a song for them before, called "Lucian's Song", which is about the fairy princess Lucian and humans. The beautiful love of young Belem.
Lucien is the most beautiful woman of the elves from ancient times to the present, and also a noble elven princess, while Belen is just an ordinary human, but they fall in love.
The next plot is also easier to guess: the Elf King’s stick beats the Mandarin Duck, and Belen must complete an impossible task-to regain an Elf Diamond from the "Devil’s Demon King" Morgoth before he is willing to admit the two Love. Belen completed the task but died unfortunately. The heartbroken Lucien moved the gods with mourning, and finally summoned Belen from the "Mandous Hall" where the souls were. She resolutely gave up the elf's eternal identity and stayed with Belen for the rest of her life.
And this song was actually written by Tolkien to his wife.
Lucian's prototype is Tolkien's wife Edith. His wife is also his muse, prompting him to start writing from the story of Belém and Lucian, and expand an entire Middle-earth world.
Edith died in 1971; two years later, Tolkien also followed his wife's footsteps. On the tombstone where they were buried together, the names "Lucien" and "Belen" were engraved.
In a letter to his son, Tolkien wrote:
"Dear Chris, the countless significance of Lucian's role is self-evident, because she is, and she also knows that she is my Lucian. I never called her Lucian, but she is the Silmarillion. The source of the core story here, I originally conceived this story, in a woodland in Ruth, Yorkshire, where hemlocks grew.
I was in charge of an outpost in the Humber Garrison in 1917, and was finally able to live with her briefly. In those days, her hair was black, her skin was smooth, her eyes were brighter than you have ever seen, and she often sang and danced.
But the story went off track, I was left behind, and I couldn't go to the merciless Mandus and ask for it. I don't want to go on. "
[Xiaoge Note] In 1917, Father Tolkien served on the front lines of World War I. During World War II, he insisted on the creation of the "Lord of the Rings" story in order to encourage his son on the battlefield in Africa.
4. Aragorn and Arwen: I have seen this sister before?
In the film, Lagon and Arwen are childhood sweethearts, because Aragorn, as the adopted son of Elrond, lives with his mother in the "Valley" of Arwen's house.
In the original book, the two sides met for the first time when Aragorn was 20 years old. At that time, Aragorn was walking in the forest and sang "Lucian's Song" casually, Arwen suddenly appeared in front of the boy's eyes.
Why didn't they see it when they were young? The answer is that Alwen was at grandma's house at that time. Who is her grandmother?
Before revealing the answer to this mystery, let’s talk about another heavy "gossip" ——
Aragorn and Arwen are relatives. She is the daughter of grandfather's grandfather's grandfather's grandfather's grandfather...'s mother's great-grandfather's elder brother's daughter.
Arwen’s father, Elrond’s twin brother, is the 61st generation of ancestor Elros from Aragon. Therefore, Arwen is considered to be the grandmother of Aragon. The elves are immortal races. In their generation, human beings have passed n generations.
From this ancestral tree, it is not difficult to find that Arwen’s grandmother is Galadrell—you guessed it, that is the beautiful elf queen Galad who lives in Krasnayason in "The Lord of the Rings" Riel (translated into Galadriel in the film)!
In addition, the Zupu also better explains why Alwen can freely choose between "human beings and elves".
As the descendants of Belen and Lucian, this branch of her family is originally a half-elf. And her grandfather was given the opportunity to choose freely because he had seen the gods "Vera", but her father Elrond chose to be an elf, and her uncle Elros chose to be a human.
5. Why not take the big eagle and fly to Mordor to destroy the Lord of the Rings?
After watching the movie, many people are very confused about this. In fact, there are many details in the original work that reveal the reasons.
The eagle is an independent race, like the elves and dwarves, not a servant of Gandalf.
The one who often helps Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" is "Wind King" Gwaihir. He also has a brother named Landlova, who are the most powerful direct descendants of Thorondo and live in the Misty Mountains.
This race plays the role of a "monitor", most of the time it is only responsible for monitoring Sauron's movements, and rarely participates in the grievances of various races, a bit like the "Switzerland" in Middle-earth . They often come out to launch a "critical blow" after the situation becomes clear.
They are arrogant and can't be used casually.
For example, after Gwyeth rescued Gandalf who was under house arrest from Saruman, Gandalf wanted him to take him farther, so he went straight back: "I was sent to deliver the letter, not to carry people. ."
In addition, Gandalf asked Gwyhir and his people to collect Mordor's information, but they couldn't escape the threat of "Eye of Sauron".
There is a paragraph in the original book: He (referring to Gwyhill) has sharp eyes, but he can't see what's happening at the foot of the mountain or under the tree.
This shows that the scope of the big eagle's territory is limited and it is impossible to play an unlimited role. Moreover, as long as anyone wears the Lord of the Rings, Sauron will perceive it. Riding on a big eagle, it is easier to become an attack target.
6. Who can fight Gandalf and Sauron with the Lord of the Rings?
According to Tolkien's reply to readers, the two sides will draw a tie .
The basic setting of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is "The Lord of the Rings will recognize the Lord", and it desperately wants to return to its owner Sauron.
During the fight, the Lord of the Rings will find ways to help Sauron, so Gandalf who wears the Lord of the Rings will be disturbed by it. And Sauron, who has been corrupted for thousands of years, and wasted a lot of energy in controlling other Middle-earth populations, he is no longer in his peak state.
However, Tolkien felt that for Middle-earth, if Gandalf had the Lord of the Rings, the situation would be worse than that of Sauron. In order to maintain the "justice" he believes, he will become self-serving and self-righteous.
In the second chapter of the book, it was hinted-Gandalf himself did not dare to touch the Lord of the Rings, otherwise Frodo would not need to take risks at all.
7. Why did Frodo become the "chosen son" of the ring?
Frodo's ability to become a "guardian" is not an accident.
The original book clearly mentions: Hobbits love peace, have a stoic character, and are very generous and not greedy. The most notable manifestation is "giving others gifts on their birthdays."
Therefore, whether it is Guru, Bilbo, or Frodo, after getting the Lord of the Rings, at best, they are a bit "schizophrenic", but they have never used the Lord of the Rings to do bad things.
Secondly, the family of Bilbo Baggins is very independent in the Shire. Compared with the "dead house" life of other tribesmen, there seems to be an "adventurous" gene in their bloodline: Balbo was "abducted" to become a "dragon warrior", Frodo and his parents obviously can't swim. I wanted to go boating in the river, unfortunately drowned...
The important point is that Tolkien has already drawn the "red line of fate" in the original book: Bilbo and Frodo were born on the same month and the same day, and their birthdays are on September 22! On Bilbo’s 111th birthday, Frodo’s 33-year-old coming-of-age ceremony (the Hobbit is only considered an adult at 33).
The age at which Frodo took the precepts and set off in the book is the same as the age at which Bilbo ventured back, both are 50 years old.
8. The Lord of the Rings doesn't seem to have any special mana besides being invisible?
This is really wronged the Lord of the Rings! The film has very little on its origins, and Frodo's own strength is too weak to use its full energy, which makes this misunderstanding.
The original work has been explained——
"These rings will empower each owner according to their situation? Before you can use that power, you need to become much stronger than you are now, and you must train your will to control others."
The reason for using "these rings" is that all magic rings made by elves can be called "Magic Rings", but some of them are more powerful, they are called "Power Rings."
As mentioned in the opening poem of "The Lord of the Rings", there are a total of 20 "Rings of Power" (three elves, seven dwarves, nine humans, and supreme rings).
The story of "The Lord of the Rings" mainly revolves around this "Supreme Ring".
Sauron stole the technology of the elves and cast the supreme ring without permission from other races, injecting most of his magic power into it.
The functions of the Supreme Ring include :
1) Control and dominate the rings and the wearers of the rings, spy on and control the thoughts of the ring wearers.
2) You can step into another world "Secluded World", invisible to the naked eye (this is the principle that the Lord of the Rings can make people "invisible"). However, if you often use it to become invisible, it will eventually fade into a ghost (this is how the Nine Ring Spirits come from).
3) Can insight into things that are invisible to ordinary people. For example, Frodo can see the "Ring of Water" in Galladrell's hand, but Sam can't.
4) Can gain insight into the thoughts of others.
5) It can confuse people's hearts and induce depravity.
6) Some elements can be controlled and manipulated. The Mordor Fortress Baldur was built with the power of the Supreme Ring.
7) Delay aging and prolong life. This is the original intention of the elves to create the Lord of the Rings, they want to protect the beautiful things from the destruction of time.
However, the Supreme ring also has two weaknesses -
1) If someone else takes the Lord of the Rings, and the person who takes the Lord of the Rings is strong enough, then he can master the full power of the Supreme Ring and replace Sauron, such as Gandalf.
2) Once it is destroyed, Sauron's power will be relieved and his physical body will be wiped out.
[Xiaoge Note] Guess how the domineering poem "One Ring to Rule Them All" was written?
According to Father Toh himself, he came up with it while taking a bath in the bathtub. Imagine that he was lying in the bathtub with his beloved pipe in his mouth, and a huge map of Middle-earth appeared in front of him. In the future, the codeword is not inspired, maybe you can try it (but I can’t afford the bathroom of the Imperial Capital...)
9. Saruman’s "Shame": I am not Sauron’s minion
As the only person who saw Tolkien, the actor Christopher Lee of "Saruman" was very dissatisfied with the film adaptation because the film dwarfed Saruman.
In terms of origin, Saruman and Sauron are second-class gods "Miya", and both come from the sect of Aoli. The two are considered equal brothers.
In the original work, Saruman initially pretended to cooperate with Sauron in order to find and possess the "Supreme Ring" and become another "Sauron".
"Isn Saruman a traitor?" Jimley asked.
"He is indeed a traitor-a double-sided traitor." Gandalf said, "...Saruman is also selfish and wants to intercept the Lord of the Rings for his own use..."
Baldur, where Isengard and Sauron are where he is, are two different evil forces in Middle-earth, located on the east and west ends of the map. But the kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan are just sandwiched between them, and they are attacked!
10. The real "You Shall Not Pass"
The classic line that Gandalf shouted when he fought against the Balrog actually originated from Tolkien's memory of the First World War.
In the famous "Battle of Verdun", in order to boost morale, French generals printed the slogan "They Shall Not Pass" on uniforms and propaganda posters, which were later used on the Maginot line. It was subsequently used in the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
Many people therefore think that this is Tuo Lao writing a historical fable, and some people see the metaphor of "environmentalism" from it, but Father Tolkien said, "This story is not a fable!"
In the preface to the second edition of the original book, he explained:
"I could cater to the tastes and opinions of those who love fables or metaphors of current events and design other plots. But I don't like fables in any form since I am mature and sensitive enough to perceive its existence. So it is.
I prefer history, no matter whether history is real or fictitious, it has different applicability to different readers' thoughts and experiences. In my opinion, many people confuse "applicability" and "fable". The former allows readers to understand freely, while the latter is deliberately controlled by the author. "
There are many differences between the film and the original book. For example, the classic "Rohan Kingdom" royal battle and the battle of "Helm Valley" in the film . The description is more erratic, and the feeling of survival from a desperate situation.
Gandalf, who left on a white horse, did not clearly inform Aragorn and others when he would return as in the film...
Although the film has ended, the adventure continues.
"I think I am quite ready for another adventure. ——Bilbo Baggins"
More exciting, more enjoyable to read the original!
