That touch of red-"Schindler's List"

When the red dress appeared on the corpse truck, my hands couldn’t help but tremble. Actually, it should have been like this. After all, she is such a small and weak little girl. If she could survive, it would be impossible. Miracle. But, I can't help but think back to that, on such a gloomy street, she walked around, then opened a door, and cleverly hid under the bed. At that time, she was so hopeful that she could escape the catastrophe.

Her death was a strong touch for Schindler. If this inspired Schindler's conscience to save the Jews consciously, would her sacrifice be considered worthwhile?

"Schindler's List" is of course a film that has been known for a long time, but I haven't watched it, it's not because I didn't have a chance, I didn't dare. It has been 15 years since 1993, when it was first released, to 2008 now, and now I see it, I understand that I didn’t look at it before, it’s right, and when I can’t bear it, if I watch it, it might be counterproductive. Even now, in the process of looking at it, I only felt sweat in the palm of my hand. I don't know who would die suddenly and silently, in the hands of Goff or other Nazis. Compared with this film, "A Beautiful Life" is more tender, but not enough to portray cruelty, and cruelty is everywhere, the sky is falling ashes, and life is like grass mustard.

Life was originally noble to be equivalent to the world. "Saving a person is equal to saving the world." But in that era, life was just a number. Nearly six million Jews died in unfavorable ways. An ant, in the eyes of the noble Aryan nation, the Jewish nation is like rubbish and has nothing to do with the dignity of life. And this is not an individual case. There are similar records in history, ancient and modern Chinese and foreign histories, including China.

I can't analyze this film rationally, and I don't want to. As a person born at the end of the Cultural Revolution, I can actually say that I have never experienced the Holocaust. I only learned about the Holocaust from books and movies. Even this indirectness is already painful. Individuals are completely submerged in the torrent of history. We can’t help but admit that there are too many things that we can’t do. Some can be achieved without hard work and wisdom. Sometimes, we can only fall silently on the wheels of the times. Down, not even the ashes are left.

Of course, it is not hopeless, like a touch of red in the gloomy gray and black, like the scene of turning from black and white to color, after crossing life and death, life is so sweet and precious, it does not have to be experienced to survive to understand.

Never lose hope, always cherish compassion and love.

Schindler's List quotes

  • [last title card]

Title card: There are fewer than 4000 Jews left alive in Poland today. There are more than 6000 descendants of the Schindler Jews.

  • Amon Goeth: Scherner told me something else about you.

    Oskar Schindler: Yeah, what's that?

Amon Goeth: That you know the meaning of the word 'gratitude.' That it's not some vague thing with you like it is with others. You want to stay where you are. You've got things going on the side, things are good. You don't want anybody telling you what to do. I can understand all that. You know, I know you... What you want is your own sub-camp. Do you have any idea what's involved? The paperwork alone? Forget you've got to build the fucking thing, getting the fucking permits is enough to drive you crazy. Then the engineers show up. They stand around, they argue about drainage, foundations, codes, exact specifications, parallel fences four kilometers long, six thousand kilograms of electrified fences... I'm telling you, you'll want to shoot somebody. I've been through it, you know, I know.

Oskar Schindler: Well, you know, you've been through it. You could make things easier for me. I'd be grateful.
