Not a suspenseful story, but a class tear.

In this world, people who have never lived in a basement are lucky.

The cramped space, the clothes that never dry out, the humid and sticky air. You don't know when black mold spots will grow on food, clothes, tablecloths, or even walls.

There is always greasy fumes on the cook that can't be washed off. People living in the basement also have an odor that is difficult to remove.

That is the taste of poverty.

The young master of the wealthy owner keenly sensed the similar smell of the basement on the driver's nanny and the tutor. They put on glamorous clothes, dressed themselves carefully, carefully concealed their cramps, and packaged themselves into new identities like actors, and finally were able to enter and exit the mansion that did not belong to them. However, the smell of a person cannot be covered up. The essence of poverty is always revealed from time to time, just like the swear words inadvertently cursed by Driver Jin while driving.

From the perspective of an individual, this can be interpreted as a "farmer and snake" story, a concretization of "the poor livelihood and the prosperous conscience". The rich family provided job opportunities for the poor, and the poor avenged their gratitude. However, if you look at the macro level, you can see more. Social resources tend to lean towards the upper class by a large margin, and the people at the bottom are leaning against each other because of resource shortages; children with average qualifications in the upper class receive a good education, and children at the bottom are naturally regarded as inadequate. In this context, the birth of contradiction appears less abrupt.

The turning point of the story started on that rainy day. The family living in the semi-basement entered the mansion and celebrated happily. The old nanny who came in the rain broke all this and revealed a secret-the deep underground air-raid shelter was her husband's residence. When two poor families met in the basement, they did not choose to understand and help each other. The low-level people who don't see the sun, in front of the little survival resources that can be obtained by the pity of the upper-level people, they rush to each other like crazy.

Who caused all this?

The host family has gone home. The three protagonists, father and son, fled. Afraid of being discovered, he could only hide under the coffee table in the living room, and live broadcast the fragrant scenes of the host husband and wife. The significance of this scene is very desperate. When the noblewoman of ancient Rome took a bath, the male slave could wait on the sidelines, and sometimes even rubbed the body of the mistress. Because slaves are not regarded as people of the opposite sex with gender, let alone people who can spy on the privacy of others, they only exist as a kind of functional animals. At this moment, the three father and son hiding under the coffee table in the living room lost their dignity as human beings as they heard the affection of the host couple.

They fled back to their home in the heavy rain, drenched and embarrassed. The rain rushed towards the low-lying places, and the stairs in the rapids were so steep and slippery that they would not be able to climb for a lifetime.

The younger sister questioned his father on the road: What about the people in the basement? How can anyone live in such a place? Live in the basement!

Yeah, why would anyone live in such a place? Live in the basement?

Their home also lives in the basement.

The rain poured down and half of the basement was flooded with water, as if flood water poured into insect nests. Father rescued mother's hammer throw medal, and brother picked up the stone given by his friend. Although the toilet has been installed in the highest position in the room, sewage is still gushing upward. My sister touched the hidden money and a pack of Marlboro black ice on the ceiling, and lit the moist smoke while sitting on the toilet that was constantly spewing sewage.

This is the last cigarette in her life. At this moment they finally realized that their family is no different from the man in the basement.

The next day, the distressed family woke up in the gym and received a call from the owner to organize a birthday party for the young master.

There is no place to take a bath, so I can barely pick out a few decent clothes to wear from the pile of clothes donated by others. Dad dragged his tired body and drove for the hostess. The hostess took off her shoes, leaned her bare feet on the front seat, and happily made the phone call, but when she heard the smell of the front seat, she frowned and covered her nose.

The elder brother stood in front of the French windows of the wealthy daughter and looked at the neat lawn courtyard. The well-dressed guests laughed at Yan Yan, beautiful and natural. They are not like themselves, they need to go through a long preparation and disguise to be eligible to enter the rich area. They originally belonged here. They toasted to celebrate their children's birthday. They enjoy the best resources. They carry some naive stupidity. They look gentle and kind.

"Because I am rich, I am kind."

The killers are bugs from the underground, and they will be treated as ghosts by children when they climb on the ground. The Morse code that is typed out while hiding in the ground is only ignored. Even relying on a little resource shed from the fingers of the upper class, the parasite is already grateful.

"Just being alive, you have already exhausted all your strength."

Mom killed the people from the basement for defense. The male proprietor hurried to pick up the keys of the Mercedes-Benz that had fallen underground, but the smell of the corpse on the ground stopped him.

That is the smell of the basement. It is the taste of poverty, the taste of helplessness, and the taste of desperation. This smell transcended the boundaries of the male proprietor, making him feel offensive and disgusting.

The male boss covered his nose in disgust.

I have nothing to eat, I am going to die of starvation, and there is no hot water or shower where I live. The gentle and educated rich master said that I do not pay attention to personal hygiene.

The moment the male proprietor covered his nose, Dad picked up the knife. Dad also wore the Indian headdress for the children’s birthday, which looked a little funny. In this comical atmosphere all decent guests fled. Dad escaped from the gate and disappeared into the ground.

It's like a cockroach that got into the ground after turning on the light.

After the operation, my brother couldn't stop laughing wildly. The doctor said this was a normal reaction after brain surgery. He once wanted to hold that piece to bring good luck to the whole family to give destiny a head-on blow, but in the end he was defeated. An absurd smile can't explain all of this, it can only make everything more absurd.

At the end of the story, Dad was trapped deeper underground, and the mother and son who had lost their sister returned to their home in the half-basement. They exhausted all their cleverness and failed to climb even a half-story high ladder.

Feeling the conscience, is this movie worth the climax of the whole network? I don't think

It was a bit uncomfortable to watch, not because the film was cruel, but because it was too hard and concave. The coincidence in the plot is understandable, but a family where no one can find a job can actually deceive the rich into a circle, and all business abilities are passed. This is the screenwriter's evasive problem. Happy twist can do this, can Bong Joonho do the same? I can't find any innovative discussion in this film, just to see how hopeless and numb he is repeating to show the people at both ends of the class. Chinese people (including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) are really happy to enjoy this kind of pretending to be profound, and then engage in fierce debate on some fake issues. Finally, as a movie that strives to show multiple meanings, the butt is crooked. President Park's family is stupid, but what did they do wrong?

Parasite quotes

  • Kim Ki-jung: [about Moon-gwang] She may look like a sheep, but inside, she's a fox. Sometimes she acts like she owns the house.

Kim Ki-woo: Right. Of all the people in that house, she's lived there the longest. She was housekeeper to the architect Namgoong, but then she went on to work for this family. When the architect moved out, he introduced this woman to Park's family, telling them, "This is a great housekeeper, you should hire her".

Chung-sook: So she survived a change of ownership.

Kim Ki-woo: She won't give up such a good job easily.

Kim Ki-jung: To extract a woman like that, we need to prepare well.

Kim Ki-woo: Right, we need a plan.

Park Da-hye: [cut to a scene with Ki-woo and Da-hye] I want to eat peaches. I like peaches best.

Kim Ki-woo: Why not ask for some?

Park Da-hye: No peaches at our house. It's a forbidden fruit.

Kim Ki-woo: [cut back to the Kims; referring to Moon-gwang] So according to what Da-hye told me, she's got a pretty serious allergy to peaches. You know that fuzz on the peach skin? If she's anywhere near it, she gets a full body rash, has trouble breathing, asthma, a total meltdown!

[Moon-gwang falls sick after Ki-woo puts peach fuzz on her]

Ki-taek: Anyway. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but her words came through clearly! So I couldn't help but...

Kim Ki-woo: Cut, cut! Dad, your emotions are up to here. Bring them down to about there.

    Ki-taek: So I couldn't help but overhear...

    Kim Ki-woo: Keep it focused!

Ki-taek: [to Mrs. Park] What I'm trying to say is... it's just that, your housekeeper's voice is quite loud, you know?

Park Yeon-kyo: I understand, it's all right. Just tell me, okay?

Ki-taek: She said she got diagnosed with active tuberculosis and she was practically shouting over the phone, so upset she could barely control herself!

    Park Yeon-kyo: Tuberculosis? Come on...

Ki-taek: It's true, she phoned someone saying she had active TB.

Kim Ki-wooPark Yeon-kyo: Do people still get TB?

Kim Ki-woo: [cut back to the Kims] Dad, back in the day, people used to buy Christmas Seals, right? Feels like a bygone era.

Ki-taek: [cut back to Ki-taek and Mrs. Park] But I saw it on the internet. Korea has the #1 rate of TB of all the OECD countries.

Kim Ki-woo: [cut back to the Kims] But she's still working, as if nothing's wrong - with a kid like Da-song in the house.

Ki-taek: [cut back to Ki-taek and Mrs. Park] So you've got a young kid like Da-song in the house, and a TB patient is doing dishes, cooking, spraying spittle...

    Park Yeon-kyo: Stop it, please!

[cut to the Kims putting peach fuzz on Moon-gwang, causing her to fall sick again, and Ki-taek using chili sauce to fake Moon-gwang's blood]

  • [last lines]

Kim Ki-woo: Dad, today I made a plan - a fundamental plan. I'm going to earn money, a lot of it. University, a career, marriage, those are all fine, but first I'll earn money. When I have money, I'll buy the house. On the day we move in, Mom and I will be in the yard. Because the sunshine is so nice there. All you'll need to do is walk up the stairs. Take care until then. So long.
