"Choose Life, Choose a job, Choose a career..."
The film Trainspotting opens with a memorable monologue from Mark Renton. The police are chasing him. What could he do? Choose these above, or going to jail, or to die?
This is the story of Mark and his so-called friends—a bunch of losers, liars, psychos, thieves and druggies. They chose heroin, and the most degenerate life in the dirtiest corner of Glasgow. This is the plot of Trainspotting apparently, and the reason why it was disputed in these years. You may either love it very much or hate it. Few neutrals exist.
If this is a film only plays up the decadence of youth, it should be throw into the dustbin when we finish see it. That's no so simple. Trainspotting is not only about drug addiction, but also about the relationship between wasted youth and the spiritually bankrupt society which has reprobated them. It proposes the problems of how to choose life. In this film I had seen my own shadow on Mark, a little bit arrogant, a little bit shy; sometimes angry, sometimes quiet.
At the end of Trainspotting , when those partners appeared in his life again, Mark found that he had already been incompatible with them. Then he chose betrayal, he found an opportunity to escape his fate at last. In fact, any guys would do that if he had the insight . It's not a shame to betray. The shameful one is the man who is staying in the past.
Although Mark was still running on the way of pursuing, he would not pursue purposelessly as adolescence. All he need to find is an adult's life style. “Cars, career, family, fucking big television, washing machines…” Mark moved on his way with a smile. Now, I'm on the way to my dream too. Maybe one day, I will meet Mark; the young man whose youth has been fade from his memory; the young man just likes me.

In order to impress the shot of drugs entering the toilet, the dirty cesspool instantly turned into a warm ocean in his heart.

This is what I saw...Although I was not a good student since I was a child, I probably really can't substitute for drug addicts and decadent youth. Let me look at this group of people from the perspective of my childhood. Isn't this a shame...

Trainspotting quotes

  • Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Thank you, your honor. With God's help I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

  • Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: [narrating] I wished that I'd gone down instead of Spud. Here I was surrounded by my family and my so-called mates and I've never felt so alone. Never in all my puff. Since I was on remand, they've had me on this program, this state sponsored addiction. Three sickly sweet doses of methadone a day instead of smack. But it's never enough. And at the moment it's nowhere near enough. I took all three this morning and now I've got eighteen hours to go until my next shot. I've got sweat on my back like a layer of frost. I need to visit the Mother Superior for one hit. One final hit to get us over this long, hard day.

    [to Swanney 'Mother Superior']

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: What's on the menu this evening, Sir?

    Swanney: Your favorite dish.

    Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Excellent.

    Swanney: Your usual table, Sir.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Oh, why thank you.

Swanney: Would Sir care to pay for his bill in advance?

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: No. Stick it on my tab.

Swanney: Ah, regret to inform, sir, credit limit was reached and breached quite some time ago.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Oh, well in that case...

    [hands him some cash]

Swanney: Ah, hard currency. Thank you, Sir. Can't be too careful these days. Would Sir care for a starter of some garlic bread perhaps?

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: No, thank you. I will proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please.
