Linear and three-dimensional thinking

This article turned out to be a diary of mine . As an engineer in the Bay Area, I encounter a lot of communication problems in my daily life, and I often think about this problem. This article hopes to share my personal thinking and experience, and provide some suggestions.

The film is adapted from the short story " Stories of Your Life ". Movies and novels reflect some details about the way of thinking from different aspects, which is very interesting from the screening.

When thinking about complex issues, what usually appears in my mind is a three-dimensional scene. Adjusting a certain part and each part will be adjusted accordingly to achieve the overall best. It is not difficult to express this scene in Chinese, because Chinese I don’t pay much attention to word order. The content of the latter text can be supplemented to the previous text. Reading the complete sentence/text, it is easy to connect the whole text together as a whole.

for example:

1) The biggest advantage of this way of thinking is that it is fast and moves the whole body with one move, without having to start from a source and think linearly step by step.

2) This way of thinking moves the whole body with one move. The biggest advantage is that it is fast, and there is no need to start from a source and think linearly step by step.

3) This way of thinking does not need to start from a source and think linearly step by step, and move the whole body with one move. The biggest advantage is that it is fast.

4) The biggest advantage of this way of thinking is that it is fast. You don't need to start from a source and think linearly step by step, and move your whole body with one movement.

...

These sentences above have exactly the same meaning. Moreover, you can further enumerate the permutations and combinations of these short sentences, and the meaning is the same. This is very interesting. At the end of the movie, there is a scene where the octopus sprays a large amount of ink on the screen. It feels similar to Chinese at this point.

However, English* is not. In English speaking, in general, there must be inherent logic in each sentence, such as: cause and effect, sequence. If the above meaning is to be understood by ordinary Americans, it can almost only be expressed by slowly linear causality.

This is very interesting. In daily work, as an engineer, there are many situations where you need to communicate with people, especially in plain text: email, jira ticket, slack. I found that when using a linear way of thinking in asynchronous text communication, although the thinking efficiency is lower than that of the three-dimensional type, the communication efficiency is higher, and it is not easy to cause misunderstandings and work faster.

*: Different English-speaking countries have different ways of thinking; people from different cultural backgrounds have different ways of thinking when they speak English. According to personal experience, generally the higher the level of education (here refers to the humanities education, self-education school education is counted, not the university to go to a prestigious school), the more able to understand the internal logic of reversing the past expression method. Build the overall concept.

**: My personal experience shall prevail.

The appearance of the spaceship is the apostle of "Neon Genesis Evangelion", the atmosphere inside is that of "Fog Lands", and the alien shape is basically the aliens Kang and Kodos of "The Simpsons". The biggest question is why not Hawking and Noam Chomsky. The bigger question is that from a linguistic point of view, it is far-fetched that language can affect thinking, not to mention that to achieve earth-shaking changes, it can only be said that it is very sci-fi but not scientific.

Not the best science fiction film, but the best science fiction art film. No matter what subject matter he took over, Villeneuve could always turn it into his own style calmly. Because I haven't read the original work, I get the kind of sadness that looks through the long river at a glance. PS If this film is a space god stick film, then "interstellar crossing" isn't it...

Arrival quotes

  • Ian Donnelly: [narrating] Why did they park where they did? The world's most decorated experts can't crack that one. The most plausible theory is that they chose places on earth with the lowest incidence of lightning strikes. But there are exceptions. The next most plausible theory is that Sheena Easton had a hit song at each of these sites in 1980. So, we just don't know.

  • Ian Donnelly: As I watch you steer us around these communication traps that I didn't even know existed, it's like, "what?" I guess that's why I'm single.

Louise Banks: Trust me, you can understand communication and still end up single.
