American Psycho is one of my favorite movies. I especially want to talk about it recently because I just finished reading its original novel this summer. Reading this novel has made me more clearly aware of the difficulties and techniques of film script adaptation, and also more aware of the greatness of this movie.
The protagonist of the American Psycho movie is a Wall Street boy named Patrick Bateman. He is probably the most narcissistic and arrogant person you can see in your life. The movie is set at the end of the 80s, and you will see him wearing old big headphones and listening to songs by Huey Lewis and the News, Phil Collins, and whitney Huston in the Walkman. He will comment on these phenomenal figures and musical works in popular culture with other characters in large sections, and after expressing his own comments, he will kill them. Because killing is his hobby at night. This man is a bloodthirsty serial killer, who likes to find his prey randomly at night. And he was addicted to killing, and this addiction began to spread to the day, affecting his daily life.
This movie is quite special. It is difficult for a person who has watched this movie to start with the introduction of the story to make someone who has never watched it become interested in it. I have had this movie in my hands during the four years of university, but I have never watched it, because my impression is mostly from this poster. I thought it was a suspense movie or a thriller. Frankly speaking, I personally don't have the ability to appreciate thrillers, so I am always uninterested. If you are like me, then please rest assured, this movie is not a thriller, it has some bloody scenes, but it is not scary. The only thing you need to know is that this is not only a psychological suspense film, but also a great black comedy. Once you look at it with this mental preparation, you will probably make a wonderful discovery. But if you look at it as a serious dramatic thriller, you might think that everyone's acting skills in this movie are simply messed up, and your understanding of it will be greatly reduced.
The film’s performance of the protagonist’s transition from psychopathic (cold blood) to psychotic (mental disorder) is very cool, thanks to Christian Bale's acting skills and Mary Harron's director. In the first 20 minutes of the movie, you will only see that Bateman is a very wealthy selfish ghost, an upper-class villain, but the movie is slowly advancing, showing his inconsistency, narcissism and arrogance, and will give you Some very subtle details, his expression and conversation, will make you think something is wrong, hey, he seems to be more than just a bastard. After we saw his true face, most of the movie was in his private life at night, and as he became more and more unable to control himself and tried to cover up his evil deeds, the plot became more and more interesting. , More and more absurd.
Patrick Bateman is a character who is not real in the movie. As he himself said, he is just an illusory abstract body, so Christian Bale's performance is not limited to the interpretation and understanding of a real person. In fact, he let go and showed joy and faithfulness of the character's craziness on paper on the screen. You can't hear any accent in his English, and his conversation is as standard as an electronic dictionary. His usual expressions do not show any inner emotions. His figure and face are almost perfect. He is like a robot. He is very rich and has no worries about food and clothing. But because he only cares about these, he is insecure, crazy, ridiculous, and pathetic. Christian Bale's performance in this movie is absolutely worthy of an Oscar. He effortlessly demonstrated the charm that this character showed to others during the day, and he also vividly displayed his viciousness, his conceit and inferiority, his loss of control, and his crazy performance.
The skill of the director and screenwriter is also a major factor in the success of the film. There are not too many descriptions of sex and violence in this book, but once the author wants to focus on these scenes in a certain chapter, you will read a very detailed description of the entire page, and some scenes are very detailed. nausea. It is conceivable that in plots such as dismemberment and cannibalism, a movie will be very bad and fail if it is accidentally made. However, the script of this movie integrates and distributes the violent scenes in the book, as well as the director’s handling of the shots and the choice of angles, so that the movie audience can experience enough sexual and violent elements necessary to express the theme. But at the same time it won't let you see too much, which will cause disgust and boredom. So it did not affect the atmosphere of black humor in the movie.
Bateman's attitude towards life and things is almost the same during the day and night, except that he resorts to pure violence at night. The similarity between day and night clearly reflects the film’s characteristic that the selfish selfish self of Wall Street is completely concerned with their own desires and needs, and it publishes satires and comments on the corruption and harm of such people.
As I said before, this is a psychological suspense drama, and this movie draws on the way the protagonist’s psychology is portrayed in the book, that is, the protagonist’s narration. Some movies are lazy to introduce the plot through narration, so as to avoid the trouble of shooting the scene to show the audience. But the narration in this movie is necessary because it fits the ironic tone of the original and the script, and it is also necessary to show the contradictions and ridiculousness of the characters.
The other actors in the film are also great. Reese Witherspoon plays Bateman's girlfriend, a rich girl who works in ACLU who seems boring to him, which is an irony in itself. Because the ACLU is an organization dedicated to protecting the rights of minorities, and Evelyn played by Witherspoon is just a superficial princess. Jared Leto plays a competitor in Bateman's company. His play with Bale is the most classic part of the movie. And Willem Dafoe plays a detective in the film, adding a touch of suspense to the film.
The movie has many classic plots. For example, a business card scene is one of my favorites. After you finish watching, you can tell me which scene is your favorite. There are many quoted lines in the movie, such as this one: I have to return some video tapes. You can also tell me about your favorite lines after watching.
Finally, I want to say that in addition to the ironic theme of this film for the selfish upper-class buddies, there is another story line, and that is whether Bateman does the things shown to us in the whole movie. Because Bateman is not a top criminal master, his criminal behavior is very careless and easy to betray himself, and there are many plots in the movie that are very unreal, making people wonder whether this is really happening or just Happened in his mind? Which scenes in the movie are real and which are illusory? This kind of suspicion makes your thinking seem to merge with Patrick Bateman's thinking. This movie is also very beautiful in this regard. If you like me to delve into the details and hints of the movie, you will think this aspect is very good. interesting.
That's all, this movie is really difficult to explain, you need to watch it yourself to understand. But he is one of my favorite movies, and I strongly recommend you to watch it. And you only know what I'm doing in the opening title only by watching it.

Last but not least, oh captain, my captain. Our fearful trip is done.

American Psycho quotes

  • Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

  • Craig McDermott: }: I'm not really hungry, I just need to have reservations somewhere.
