Dance of Shiva

The beginning of the movie starts with a boy who died on the bottom of the sea.
The color tone is cool, and every picture seems to be covered with a layer of lead-gray yarn. The black reef, the gray sky, the light brown linen skirt, the off-white building...

The

style is strange. There is a kind of "Decameron" which is full of indifference and horror of religious and feudal temperament.
The isolation of the island is no different from a manor hidden in the countryside in Decameron for avoiding the plague.
There are only women and children on this island. This is an island without men.
The protagonist is a little boy named Nickla, who lives with his mother.
What they eat every day is a dark, sticky thing with a dozen long, thin insects inside.

In

one of the close-up shots, mother took a bite and smiled satisfied. Full of a sense of horror like a ghost.

In contrast, when the boy ate this, a numb resistance was vaguely revealed on his face. This resistance has always been silent. But it can be seen in the eyes of the boy.
The boy drinks a blue potion every day.
The boy asked if he was sick? His
mother replied that as the boy grew up, he was weak, so he needed to drink medicine.
The dialogue is full of strange distortions.

At

night, the women came to the coast together with their lights while waiting for their children to fall asleep.
Their naked bodies form a mysterious pattern, as if they use human bodies as petals, collectively called a flower, round and coquettish.
Their bodies twisted on the rocks.
Light and shadow flowed around their bodies.

This reminds me of Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci's Code", the ritual of dialogue with God in religion.
The boy wanted to explore the secrets of the existence of this island. However, deep in the secret, it is a mysterious experiment.
Experiments based on the human body.
Female doctors and nurses will gather to watch the video of the caesarean section.
They will perform operations on the children's stomachs.
Every woman's face appeared stiff, as if there was no emotional estrangement.
In this surrealistic background, the female nurse and the child began to communicate in this treacherous environment and atmosphere.
The female nurse finally told the boy the secret of the island.
Behind every woman, there is a strange thing.
That thing seems to be a symbol of sin.
As if driven by desire, the female nurse hugged the boy swimming and kissing in the ocean. The picture was so slow, like a quietly flowing river.

In the

end, the female nurse sent the boy out of the island and jumped into the sea on the way.
The boy looked again, and in front of him was a brightly lit continent.

This film is full of symbolic imagination everywhere. It's a bit fantasy, and it's like a well-planned scientific experiment. In the end, I don't know if it is a human body mutation or just like Marquez's "A Hundred Years of Solitude", the film follows a magical style.

The female nurse showed the little boy her back, her back lined up with mouthpieces like those on a starfish.
In the end, the answer given in the film is that these children exist as genitals. Everything is cryptic, and there is no obvious answer. But seeing this, I couldn't help but think of the conversation between the boy and his mother in the front.
The boy asked his mother, why is he sick? The mother gave that the boy had a period of weakness as he was growing up, so he needed to take medicine. The boy asked again, why is there a period of weakness. The mother replied that, like lizards and crabs, they become especially vulnerable when they moult.
The boy asked again, where's the starfish?
The mother replied that they only change once, when they are one year old.
The boy asked again, and then?
The mother replied that it was a new cycle, a new life.

Finally, returning to the beginning of the film, a little boy died on the bottom of the sea. On his stomach, there was a starfish.

I can't help but imagine that on this island, these women are using the bodies (belly) of these boys as a medium to raise new starfish. After these starfish grew up, they became these women. But are these women the people that the starfish turned into (just like behind the female nurse, even if they become human, they still retain the characteristics of the starfish).
