The director described a love story in sorrow and helplessness. The reason for this story is that era of helplessness, but you can't say about that era, can't reflect, can't complain, can't ridicule. So in the end, there was helplessness left. The peace in the last scene is really not peace of mind, but helpless acceptance of the status quo. But I have to say that the vast majority of Chinese people are living in this way, floating in their own destiny with the waves, not fighting or reflecting, just floating like this, instead of being quiet after reflection and hard work.
I feel that the most outstanding feature of this movie is the acting skills of the actors, especially Chen Daoming, who changed his impassioned imperial role in the past, with the gentle talents of a literati, the calmness and restraint of being a husband and father, and a rare sight of his wife and children. Gong Li’s character is not very ups and downs on the surface, but his heart is turbulent, and every look, every movement, every line is just right, which makes people feel empathetic. The two have particularly good grasp of the details, and they have seen the number of times. The more it tastes, the more it tastes.
