Why does Stephen like Camille but not Camille's love?
The biggest highlight of this film is the portrayal of Stephen's character.
It must be admitted that Stephen has a charm, which comes from his quietness and concentration, from his rich inner world that is not open to the outside world. We always feel that he has something, but we can't see it and can't get in, so it's attractive.
We always discuss whether people are rational or emotional. Whether it is Maxim or Camille, they are relatively normal people. They have enough enthusiasm and enough temperature, that is, they have enough sensibility. In other words, it lacks sufficient rationality. And once a person has enough rationality, he will be like Stephen. He has power that we cannot have, and this power is actually the power of reason.
The Heart of Winter implies that the rational power in Stephen's heart is as quiet and suicidal as winter. Therefore, only he can calmly euthanize his teacher by injection.
The biggest reason why he was reluctant to try to accept Camille was not because of fear, nor because of Maksim's triangle relationship... but because of his foresight.
