The conversion of garbage and art

"Junkyard" focuses on the livelihood of the bottom people from the perspective of art, trying to change the life of garbage scavengers (material reuse classifiers) through artistic conversion of garbage, and at the same time let the world pay attention to our living conditions. Garbage is waste. For us who make rubbish, it is waste. After we manufacture and produce materials, enjoy and consume them, the discarded garbage becomes a burden on the planet that feeds us. Scavengers: There is a group of people who are like scavengers, making a living while minimizing pollution and waste. Artists: The appearance of artists makes their insignificance be recognized as great by the world; let their ordinaryness be transformed into beauty by another kind of visualization. When garbage is converted into art, some of them can no longer feel inferior because of the value recognition brought by this artistic performance, and can tell friends around them loudly and proudly, "I work in the garbage dump." As for the artist, my soul has also been baptized through this creation. Matter is no longer as important as before, and the need can become less and less. For many people, art is rubbish! But there are such artists who can turn garbage into art. In the transformation of garbage and art, they have completed each other's salvation.

  • Valter: [talking about the importance of recycling] People sometimes say "But one single can?" One single can is of great importance. Because 99 is not 100, and that single one will make the difference.

  • Vik Muniz: [introducing his grandmother, who raised him, in English] She's the most important woman in my life. She's 93 years old.

Vik's Grandmother: [looks at him sharply] Hmm?

Vik Muniz: [in Portuguese] I told them you were 70 years old.

Vik's Grandmother: [in Portuguese] That's right.

    [Vik laughs]
