"How to End This Summer" is the third feature film of Russian director Alexi Pogrebiske. At the 60th Berlin Film Festival in 2010, he won the Outstanding Artistic Achievement Award and the Double Winner Award. This film is somewhat of mixed reputation, some audiences love it enthusiastically, and some audiences find it dull and boring. After all, the film is more than two hours long, but there are only two male actors in it, and the background is still in the desolate and cold Siberian Arctic Circle.

"How to End This Summer" has some flaws in the excessive transition of the plot, but I like the structure of the story very much. This film tells about what happened when a college graduate went to an arctic observatory to practice as an assistant to a local observer. Among the two people, one is young, one is a mature man, one is lively, and the other is dull. Between the ice-covered and desolate world, the different personality differences between the two inevitably produce collisions and frictions. As a result, a young man's well-intentioned act, but due to the isolation of the isolated environment and improper handling, finally almost reached an irreparable situation.

■At the beginning of the film, the young and middle-aged people have been alone at the observatory. In an empty space, the only way for the two to communicate with the outside world is through radio. The only job of the two is to continuously record various data outside the observatory, and then transmit the data to remote personnel via radio. From the very beginning, the differences in their personalities were undoubtedly revealed. Young people love to listen to rock music, play computer games, and always try to have fun from boring work. The middle-aged man is single-boarded and rigorous, abides by all the rules of the work, and cannot tolerate any frivolous and irresponsible attitudes and behaviors. If there is anything that makes this middle-aged man look human, it is that he treats his wife and The shy and affectionate son.

As the young man seemed to have a certain familiarity with work, the middle-aged man left the observatory in peace and drove the boat to catch North Sea trout for his wife. As a result, during the time he was away, an unfortunate event happened. Staff from afar sent bad news over the radio—the middle-aged man’s wife and son both died in a car accident. Since the middle-aged man was not at the observatory, the staff at a distance had to ask the young man to convey the bad news on his behalf, and told him to pay attention to the emotional changes of the middle-aged man until the supply ship arrived five days later.

After experiencing a period of uneasy emotional ups and downs, the young man finally waited until the middle-aged man returned from the boat. However, the elated demeanor of the middle-aged man and the overflowing happiness when talking about his wife and son prevented the young man from telling the bad news. Speak out. So the young man privately decided that since the supply ship would come to pick up the middle-aged person in five days, he should keep the bad news until that time. After all, the sad day is one less day. For this reason, the young people secretly stuffed candy paper into the radio equipment, so that the remote staff could not talk to the middle-aged people.

Although the starting point is good, it may not be able to reach a good end. It also requires firm determination and a sense of responsibility. The middle-aged people didn't know the young people's inner struggles and decisions, but discovered that the young people had overslept during working hours, and therefore made up a set of data indiscriminately. The middle-aged man was furious about this. In his mind, although this job is boring, it represents the research efforts of many people over the years. An unintentional negligence may make these efforts in vain. The middle-aged man not only scolded the young man harshly, but also told him that there had been a murder at the observatory many years ago, and the cause of the incident was this kind of careless attitude.

The young man told the middle-aged the bad news later, but he said it viciously in anger. Due to the loss of the radio, the middle-aged man decided to go fishing again and bring back more kippers for his wife. During this period of time, the young man repaired the radio and learned that the staff at a distance told him to wait for the helicopter to replace the supply ship. However, because of the heavy fog, the young man was unable to contact the helicopter and encountered a polar bear. , Falling down the hillside. When the middle-aged man saw the young man's embarrassment, he naturally ridiculed, and this caused the young man to burst into emotions, angrily saying that his wife and son were dead, and it was because of this that he was injured and distressed.

When a person's heart is full of anger and guilt, everything he sees is inevitably wicked. Because of viciously speaking about the middle-aged man’s loss of his family, the young man felt that the middle-aged man’s gestures were filled with mad anger and intentions to hurt himself, so the young man began to hide and call the middle-aged man to himself. Treated as a disguised act of booby-trapping oneself. As a result, the young man was injured and frozen while hiding, and when he had a fever, dreaming and unconscious, he walked to the nearby place where the atomic bomb was placed, and was severely polluted by radiation. When the young man woke up, he was extremely angry at what happened to him. He decided to steal the kippers hanging outside the observatory, expose it to radiation pollution, and let the middle-aged people eat it in order to retaliate for the harm he suffered.

When the young man hid outside the observatory and secretly observed through the window whether the middle-aged man had eaten the contaminated kipper, the middle-aged man also saw him. The middle-aged man shook his head slightly to signal the young man to come in. . The young man entered the house quietly and slowly sat down beside the middle-aged man, while the middle-aged man passed the leftover kippers to him without a word. Because of the calm and friendly attitude of the middle-aged people, the young people had no choice but to tell that the kippers had been contaminated by radiation. The middle-aged man immediately rushed into the bathroom and vomited after hearing this. He had eaten most of the contaminated kippers. After returning from the bathroom, the middle-aged man just said flatly that there was no need to tell this matter, and he would not tell anyone.

The supply ship finally arrived, but only the young people left with the ship. Before leaving, the young man asked the middle-aged person to go back with him for a physical examination. He was willing to confess what he did wrong and assume corresponding responsibilities. But the middle-aged man gave the young man a strong hug and gritted his teeth and said: Don’t you understand? I can only do it alone here.

■The biggest feature of "How to End This Summer" is that there are only two characters. The focus of the film is on the behavioral interaction and emotional ups and downs between these two characters. Furthermore, the focus of the film’s observations is on young people, showing how a person distorts his understanding of the outside world because of his own behavior and emotions, and then distorts his own behavior and results because of his misunderstanding of the outside world. Made a major mistake:

Young people are kind but do not get good rewards from middle-aged people, so they feel angry, and therefore speak to hurt each other, and the result is naturally to arouse the other's anger. Faced with the anger of middle-aged people, young people feel scared and feel that the other person might hurt themselves, so they take the initiative to shoot to block the other person. When the opponent fired a counterattack for self-protection, the young man used this to confirm the other's doubts about hurting himself, and then understood the middle-aged person's good deeds to find himself as malicious, and even regarded himself as a way of avoiding the harm and injury suffered by the opponent. The pain is blamed on the other party, and the end result is vicious revenge and irreparable tragedy.

During this time, the middle-aged person was always in a state of passive reaction. Apart from the initial anger, he had never had any malicious intent towards young people. Even after learning of the bad news of his family, he still controlled his emotions and assumed responsibility. It’s my responsibility to go out to find the whereabouts of young people--the world is a hard mirror, in which, if we see beauty, that beauty comes from ourselves, if we see ugliness, then the ugliness also comes from ourselves; When it throws a stone, the stone will eventually bounce back to ourselves.

"How to End This Summer" is long. In the first half of the film, the director shot many trivial details to highlight the differences in the personality of the two characters. However, in the key events of the emotional transition in the second half, But it didn't make the transition smoothly, so it gave people a feeling that the plot changes were too abrupt. In any case, in terms of the intention of the film and the performance of the actors, this work cost less than three million US dollars is a surprise.
