After reading Indochine for the first time in high school, after nearly ten years, post-colonialism, cultural imperialism, and cultural hegemony that never retreats gradually occupied people's field of vision. The wide and beautiful scenery can no longer calm the restlessness and doubts in people's hearts. Just like Indochine's "mother" theme, the whole film tries its best to eliminate the legitimacy of the colonial government's patriarchal rule with various evils and ugliness. Eliane The tenacity based on motherhood also seems to have become the greatest force against the evil colonial forces, and has nurtured Vietnam's past and new life from it. For example, Jean-Baptiste went from being a French officer with strict law enforcement. After experiencing a mad love with Eliane, he finally transformed into a man who gave up everything for love and even betrayed the nation because of Camille.
At the end of the play, the son of Camille confirmed Eliane's legitimacy as his mother in front of the Geneva conference where the Vietnam-France relationship ended, so the culture once again strongly overwhelmed the natural blood relationship, and also concealed the confrontation of political consciousness. It makes me feel a bit at a loss and helpless.
This is definitely not just a love story that happened in Indochina.
