Front of the Class

I watched it for the first time on HBO TV at 3pm on the 24th; watched it for the second time at 11 noon on the 25th; and watched it for the third time at 7pm tonight. I really feel lucky to see it all again tonight. I still can't calm down for a long time.

Brad Cohn is a patient with Tourette's disease. He can unconsciously twitch his limbs and make strange noises. People have always looked at him differently, and his classmates have bullied him. It wasn't until a principal named Mel explained everything to the whole school at the school concert that Brad began to be truly understood and accepted by everyone, and principal Mel also changed Little Brad. He aspires to become a teacher. With gradual and unremitting efforts, Brad finally became a Cohen teacher who was respected, loved, and supported by people around him.

After watching the movie, I have learned four points:
1. The optimism, confidence, non-giving up spirit and serious and responsible attitude embodied by Mr. Cohen. Even though Tourette's disease has brought a series of troubles, people have strange eyes, and even a kind of discrimination, Mr. Cohen still maintains an optimistic and positive attitude. Brad had trouble with his father's disagreement, but he was still full of confidence, believing that he would become a teacher and fulfill his dream. In order to find a school willing to accept him, Brad even circled the schools that he had never visited on the national map, then took the map and drove there. After being rejected by 25 schools, Brad came to Jingshan Elementary School with hope. In fact, while waiting for a reply, he also doubted whether he failed again. He was very sensitive to the sound of the phone and was finally hired smoothly. With the second grade teacher Cohen started his teaching career, and the interaction with the students revealed frankness and seriousness. In order to give students a better geography class. Mr. Cohen specially invited the truck driver Maxine. After Amanda was helplessly dropped by her father into another class, she watched his geography class at the door; when Heather died, her mother insisted that he enter the church to participate in the farewell ceremony. Teacher Keen’s responsibility won him the Best New Teacher Award, and more importantly, everyone’s respect, love and support.

2. Illness and all difficulties are unstoppable and conviction for people to succeed. Tourette's disease, the trouble in the eyes of others, is the friend and teacher in Brad's eyes. When I was young, my mother tried to treat Brad's Tourette's disease. Together, they found a gathering place for patients with Tourette's disease. Among the patients, the adults did not work, the children squatted at home, and no one even dared to show up. When the mother who thought it would be therapeutically effective found that the negative atmosphere here was so unfavorable to the child, she apologized to Brad and took him away quickly. Little Brad said that he is different from the people here, and he will not be affected by the disease. Defeated, it will be success. In contrast, the father has never believed that his son can integrate into society and become a teacher. The persistent Brad sticks to his beliefs, does not care about the opinions of others, overcomes everything, uses his achievements to explain everything, and fulfills the dream of the situation.

3. The tolerance of society and the influence of public opinion on individuals. When he was a child, Brad was ridiculed and bullied by children of the same age, calling him a freak, and the immature Thomas also called him this way. People have always had the same attitude towards Brad. Elementary school female teachers, a group of unfriendly classmates, think that Brad is the hateful principal of the disabled, and even her father has prejudices; of course, life is not necessarily so bad, the support of mother and younger brother Jeff, kind-hearted May Principal, Ron, who lives together, the hard communication of stepmother Diana, the recognition of golfers, school colleagues, and the love of students. As Mr. Cohen said in his speech, I can stand here today because of you. Love and support for me. We can see how much public opinion affects a person. Perhaps we should also learn to tolerate. It is true that Brad sometimes disturbs others, but he did not do it deliberately. He should be treated fairly by the society. Society needs a kind of understanding and tolerance.

4. Occasionally see the world with the simple eyes of a child. Brad's narrator said that children see the world differently from adults. They will say "what do I want to do" instead of "what I can't do", so I do the same. The child’s immature thoughts reveal a kind of innocence that we gradually lost in the process of growing up. To survive in society, people learn to be sophisticated and start to be smooth and easy to give up when things happen. What Brad tells us is to tell our children. That way, do not give up, and strive to pursue the dream. Perhaps we can also learn to be as simple as the children, and to make everything simpler.

The trouble of illness, the torment of the heart, the incomprehension of people, Brad overcame all of these and moved towards success. I really like Jimmy Walker's excellent performance, such a lifelike image of a Brad Cohen role. What impressed me the most was his smile, confident that it could melt all ice like warm sunshine. And his crying after being hurt, crying with a kind of self-blame also deeply moved me. Of course, Brad Cohen in real life deserves our admiration. His efforts and achievements have inspired me.

Perhaps in the days to come, I will also have a confident smile, just like Brad Cohen, and strive to pursue a gradual dream, no matter what challenges I encounter, no matter how much trouble there will be.

What a surprise... This disease that has been with me for many years is called Tourette's syndrome? It's too heartbreaking...Cry into a mess, do I understand too much?.

Front of the Class quotes

  • Brad Cohen: It's hard to be patient when you feel as though you've blown your last chance.

  • Jim Ovbey: Hilarie and I discussed you with the teachers. And, we talked about how proud we are of teaching our kids to never let anything hold them back in life. And, Hilarie said that if we're gonna talk the talk, we need to walk the walk.
