Chandhini Chowk to China: Contacts and Responses of Others

I saw this movie on the Internet by chance, and I basically had no contact with Indian movies, so when the introduction said that the movie has many Chinese elements, I downloaded it and watched it.

Basically, I think this is an Indian song and dance comedy, although most of the scenes take place in China, although the Great Wall has appeared too many times in the film, although there are indeed many so-called spoofs or tribute to Chinese movies.•• ••••

Compared to the funny sections that appear to be repetitive and forceful in the film, Indian singing and dancing are more exciting. What impressed me most was the scene after Sidhu imagined China on the plane. Director Nikhil Advani used three consecutive singing and dancing to perform. The scenes range from the Tang Dynasty court full of golden chrysanthemums to the modern Shanghai Beach wrapped in cheongsam suits, to the hip-hop contemporary Chinese city. The director pays tribute to "Full of Golden Armour" and "Kung Fu". There may also be an intention to show the changes in China's history. However, in comparison with other parts, this display happened to expose the barrier of India's neighbor to China.
The core location of the story is a certain village in contemporary China. The village was built on the hillside, small and cramped, with houses with thatched roofs on both sides of the road. What's more surprising is that the villagers are all wearing short shorts with curly skirts and knotted gussets. This style of clothing should be the underwear worn by ancients, and modern farmers have long lost it. Compared with "Kung Fu Panda", this film can be said to be almost ignorant or not doing homework at all in the detailed portrayal of the Chinese scene. Probably because of this, the director moved many scenes to the Great Wall, but he exposed his guilty conscience.

However, this does not mean that the director must be disrespectful or even unkind to China. Many people may feel uncomfortable with the theme of a little chef in a slum in New Delhi saving Chinese farmers, thinking that it is the Asan brothers who care about adultery. Indeed, the appearance of this Hollywood theme of salvation in Indian movies is a bit weird. If Uncle Sam’s obscenity is caused by the confidence of the superpower, then India’s obscenity is mostly Ah Q-style spiritual victory. However, when you think about it, there is actually nothing. This is a commercial film with Chinese and Indian characteristics that is invested by the Americans and directed by the Indians. What do Americans like? Salvation heroes, in recent years especially like the unknown junior heroes who have grown up from the bottom. What's in China? The most familiar ones are of course the Great Wall and Chinese Kung Fu! What's in India? Of course it is singing and dancing, and the slums are also very popular now. As a commercial movie, of course, it must integrate the most popular and distinctive elements, and at the same time it must give people a sense of freshness-the Chinese have saved the Chinese people, the Americans have saved the Chinese people, and even the pandas have saved the Chinese people. , Then let the Indian chefs come to save the Chinese people this time!

Back to the topic of understanding and contact. Although I think India, as a neighbor, knows very little about us, but when we think about it, how much do we know about this neighbor? Besides Shakyamuni, Tagore, Taj Mahal, and slums, what else? At least I can't remember. It is said that this is the first Indian film set in China. Obviously the neighbor has already taken the first step, what about us? Although we cannot ask the film to undertake the mission of cultural contact alone, today's film has already surpassed the stage of "primary school children's stuff" and has become an art form with unique expressive advantages and prone to great influence, not only reflecting The tool of social life in any time and space is an excellent medium to show national culture. Maybe our filmmakers can make some attempts in these areas.
